King James Version (KJV) New International Version (NIV)
And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. 1 Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.
And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go , number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, "Go and count the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan. Then report back to me so that I may know how many there are."
And Joab answered , The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel? 3 But Joab replied, "May the LORD multiply his troops a hundred times over. My lord the king, are they not all my lord's subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?"
Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed , and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem. 4 The king's word, however, overruled Joab; so Joab left and went throughout Israel and then came back to Jerusalem.
And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword. 5 Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah.
