New Revised Standard (NRS) New International Version (NIV)
Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions just as I handed them on to you. 2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the teachings, just as I passed them on to you.
But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the husband is the head of his wife, and God is the head of Christ. 3 Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
Any man who prays or prophesies with something on his head disgraces his head, 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head.
but any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled disgraces her head—it is one and the same thing as having her head shaved. 5 And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head--it is just as though her head were shaved.
For if a woman will not veil herself, then she should cut off her hair; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or to be shaved, she should wear a veil. 6 If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head.
For a man ought not to have his head veiled, since he is the image and reflection of God; but woman is the reflection of man. 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.
Indeed, man was not made from woman, but woman from man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man;
Neither was man created for the sake of woman, but woman for the sake of man. 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
For this reason a woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. 10 For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head.
Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man or man independent of woman. 11 In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.
For just as woman came from man, so man comes through woman; but all things come from God. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.
Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head unveiled? 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair, it is degrading to him, 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him,
but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.
But if anyone is disposed to be contentious—we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God. 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice--nor do the churches of God.
Now in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. 17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good.
For, to begin with, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you; and to some extent I believe it. 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it.
Indeed, there have to be factions among you, for only so will it become clear who among you are genuine. 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval.
When you come together, it is not really to eat the Lord's supper. 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat,
For when the time comes to eat, each of you goes ahead with your own supper, and one goes hungry and another becomes drunk. 21 for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else. One remains hungry, another gets drunk.
What! Do you not have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you show contempt for the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I commend you? In this matter I do not commend you! 22 Don't you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? Certainly not!
For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,
and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me."
In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be answerable for the body and blood of the Lord. 27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.
Examine yourselves, and only then eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.
For all who eat and drink without discerning the body, eat and drink judgment against themselves. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.
For this reason many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.
But if we judged ourselves, we would not be judged. 31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment.
But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world. 32 When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.
So then, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 33 So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for each other.
If you are hungry, eat at home, so that when you come together, it will not be for your condemnation. About the other things I will give instructions when I come. 34 If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions.
