Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
When one of you has a grievance against a brother, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? 1 If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the saints?
Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? 2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases?
Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, matters pertaining to this life! 3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!
If then you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who are least esteemed by the church? 4 Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, appoint as judges even men of little account in the church!
I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no man among you wise enough to decide between members of the brotherhood, 5 I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers?
but brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers? 6 But instead, one brother goes to law against another--and this in front of unbelievers!
To have lawsuits at all with one another is defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? 7 The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?
But you yourselves wrong and defraud, and that even your own brethren. 8 Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers.
