Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
I am writing this to you, my children, so that you will not sin; but if anyone does sin, we have someone who pleads with the Father on our behalf - Jesus Christ, the righteous one. 1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
And Christ himself is the means by which our sins are forgiven, and not our sins only, but also the sins of everyone. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
If we obey God's commands, then we are sure that we know him. 3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.
If we say that we know him, but do not obey his commands, we are liars and there is no truth in us. 4 The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
But if we obey his word, we are the ones whose love for God has really been made perfect. This is how we can be sure that we are in union with God: 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him:
if we say that we remain in union with God, we should live just as Jesus Christ did. 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
My dear friends, this command I am writing you is not new; it is the old command, the one you have had from the very beginning. The old command is the message you have already heard. 7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard.
However, the command I now write you is new, because its truth is seen in Christ and also in you. For the darkness is passing away, and the real light is already shining. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.
If we say that we are in the light, yet hate others, we are in the darkness to this very hour. 9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.
If we love others, we live in the light, and so there is nothing in us that will cause someone else to sin. 10 Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.
But if we hate others, we are in the darkness; we walk in it and do not know where we are going, because the darkness has made us blind. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.
I write to you, my children, because your sins are forgiven for the sake of Christ. 12 I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
I write to you, fathers, because you know him who has existed from the beginning. I write to you, young people, because you have defeated the Evil One. 13 I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, dear children, because you have known the Father.
I write to you, my children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who has existed from the beginning. I write to you, young people, because you are strong; the word of God lives in you, and you have defeated the Evil One. 14 I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
Do not love the world or anything that belongs to the world. If you love the world, you do not love the Father. 15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
Everything that belongs to the world - what the sinful self desires, what people see and want, and everything in this world that people are so proud of - none of this comes from the Father; it all comes from the world. 16 For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world.
The world and everything in it that people desire is passing away; but those who do the will of God live forever. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.
My children, the end is near! You were told that the Enemy of Christ would come; and now many enemies of Christ have already appeared, and so we know that the end is near. 18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.
These people really did not belong to our fellowship, and that is why they left us; if they had belonged to our fellowship, they would have stayed with us. But they left so that it might be clear that none of them really belonged to us. 19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
But you have had the Holy Spirit poured out on you by Christ, and so all of you know the truth. 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
I write you, then, not because you do not know the truth; instead, it is because you do know it, and you also know that no lie ever comes from the truth. 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.
Who, then, is the liar? It is those who say that Jesus is not the Messiah. Such people are the Enemy of Christ - they reject both the Father and the Son. 22 Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist--he denies the Father and the Son.
For those who reject the Son reject also the Father; those who accept the Son have the Father also. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
Be sure, then, to keep in your hearts the message you heard from the beginning. If you keep that message, then you will always live in union with the Son and the Father. 24 See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.
And this is what Christ himself promised to give us - eternal life. 25 And this is what he promised us--even eternal life.
I am writing this to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.
But as for you, Christ has poured out his Spirit on you. As long as his Spirit remains in you, you do not need anyone to teach you. For his Spirit teaches you about everything, and what he teaches is true, not false. Obey the Spirit's teaching, then, and remain in union with Christ. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit--just as it has taught you, remain in him.
Yes, my children, remain in union with him, so that when he appears we may be full of courage and need not hide in shame from him on the Day he comes. 28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.
You know that Christ is righteous; you should know, then, that everyone who does what is right is God's child. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.
