Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
My dear friends, do not believe all who claim to have the Spirit, but test them to find out if the spirit they have comes from God. For many false prophets have gone out everywhere. 1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
This is how you will be able to know whether it is God's Spirit: anyone who acknowledges that Jesus Christ came as a human being has the Spirit who comes from God. 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,
But anyone who denies this about Jesus does not have the Spirit from God. The spirit that he has is from the Enemy of Christ; you heard that it would come, and now it is here in the world already. 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.
But you belong to God, my children, and have defeated the false prophets, because the Spirit who is in you is more powerful than the spirit in those who belong to the world. 4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
Those false prophets speak about matters of the world, and the world listens to them because they belong to the world. 5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them.
But we belong to God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever does not belong to God does not listen to us. This, then, is how we can tell the difference between the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.
Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Whoever loves is a child of God and knows God. 7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.
Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
And God showed his love for us by sending his only Son into the world, so that we might have life through him. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
This is what love is: it is not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the means by which our sins are forgiven. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Dear friends, if this is how God loved us, then we should love one another. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in union with us, and his love is made perfect in us. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
We are sure that we live in union with God and that he lives in union with us, because he has given us his Spirit. 13 We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
And we have seen and tell others that the Father sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.
If we declare that Jesus is the Son of God, we live in union with God and God lives in union with us. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God.
And we ourselves know and believe the love which God has for us. God is love, and those who live in love live in union with God and God lives in union with them. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.
Love is made perfect in us in order that we may have courage on the Judgment Day; and we will have it because our life in this world is the same as Christ's. 17 In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him.
There is no fear in love; perfect love drives out all fear. So then, love has not been made perfect in anyone who is afraid, because fear has to do with punishment. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
We love because God first loved us. 19 We love because he first loved us.
If we say we love God, but hate others, we are liars. For we cannot love God, whom we have not seen, if we do not love others, whom we have seen. 20 If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.
The command that Christ has given us is this: whoever loves God must love others also. 21 And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.
