Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,
and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. And this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming; and now it is already in the world. 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.
Little children, you are from God, and have conquered them; for the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
They are from the world; therefore what they say is from the world, and the world listens to them. 5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them.
We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us, and whoever is not from God does not listen to us. From this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.
Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
God's love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 13 We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.
God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God.
So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.
Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world. 17 In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him.
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
We love because he first loved us. 19 We love because he first loved us.
Those who say, "I love God," and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. 20 If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.
The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also. 21 And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.
