New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children, too. 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.
We know we love God's children if we love God and obey his commandments. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.
Loving God means keeping his commandments, and really, that isn't difficult. 3 This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,
For every child of God defeats this evil world by trusting Christ to give the victory. 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
And the ones who win this battle against the world are the ones who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
And Jesus Christ was revealed as God's Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood on the cross -- not by water only, but by water and blood. And the Spirit also gives us the testimony that this is true. 6 This is the one who came by water and blood--Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.
So we have these three witnesses -- 7 For there are three that testify:
the Spirit, the water, and the blood -- and all three agree. 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.
Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe the testimony that comes from God. And God has testified about his Son. 9 We accept man's testimony, but God's testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son.
All who believe in the Son of God know that this is true. Those who don't believe this are actually calling God a liar because they don't believe what God has testified about his Son. 10 Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.
And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
So whoever has God's Son has life; whoever does not have his Son does not have life. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
I write this to you who believe in the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
And we can be confident that he will listen to us whenever we ask him for anything in line with his will. 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
And if we know he is listening when we make our requests, we can be sure that he will give us what we ask for. 15 And if we know that he hears us--whatever we ask--we know that we have what we asked of him.
If you see a Christian brother or sister sinning in a way that does not lead to death, you should pray, and God will give that person life. But there is a sin that leads to death, and I am not saying you should pray for those who commit it. 16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that.
Every wrong is sin, but not all sin leads to death. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
We know that those who have become part of God's family do not make a practice of sinning, for God's Son holds them securely, and the evil one cannot get his hands on them. 18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him.
We know that we are children of God and that the world around us is under the power and control of the evil one. 19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.
And we know that the Son of God has come, and he has given us understanding so that we can know the true God. And now we are in God because we are in his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and he is eternal life. 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true--even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God's place in your hearts. 21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
