1 King Solomon was king over all Israel, 1 So King Solomon ruled over all Israel.
2 and these were his high officials: Azari'ah the son of Zadok was the priest; 2 And these were his chief officials: Azariah son of Zadok--the priest;
3 Elihor'eph and Ahi'jah the sons of Shisha were secretaries; Jehosh'aphat the son of Ahi'lud was recorder; 3 Elihoreph and Ahijah, sons of Shisha--secretaries; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud--recorder;
4 Benai'ah the son of Jehoi'ada was in command of the army; Zadok and Abi'athar were priests; 4 Benaiah son of Jehoiada--commander in chief; Zadok and Abiathar--priests;
5 Azari'ah the son of Nathan was over the officers; Zabud the son of Nathan was priest and king's friend; 5 Azariah son of Nathan--in charge of the district officers; Zabud son of Nathan--a priest and personal adviser to the king;
6 Ahi'shar was in charge of the palace; and Adoni'ram the son of Abda was in charge of the forced labor. 6 Ahishar--in charge of the palace; Adoniram son of Abda--in charge of forced labor.
7 Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, who provided food for the king and his household; each man had to make provision for one month in the year. 7 Solomon also had twelve district governors over all Israel, who supplied provisions for the king and the royal household. Each one had to provide supplies for one month in the year.
8 These were their names: Ben-hur, in the hill country of E'phraim; 8 These are their names: Ben-Hur--in the hill country of Ephraim;
9 Ben-deker, in Makaz, Sha-al'bim, Beth-she'mesh, and E'lonbeth-ha'nan; 9 Ben-Deker--in Makaz, Shaalbim, Beth Shemesh and Elon Bethhanan;
10 Ben-hesed, in Arub'both (to him belonged Socoh and all the land of Hepher); 10 Ben-Hesed--in Arubboth (Socoh and all the land of Hepher were his);
11 Ben-abin'adab, in all Naphath-dor (he had Taphath the daughter of Solomon as his wife); 11 Ben-Abinadab--in Naphoth Dor (he was married to Taphath daughter of Solomon);
12 Ba'ana the son of Ahi'lud, in Ta'anach, Megid'do, and all Beth-she'an which is beside Zarethan below Jezreel, and from Beth-she'an to A'bel-meho'lah, as far as the other side of Jok'meam; 12 Baana son of Ahilud--in Taanach and Megiddo, and in all of Beth Shan next to Zarethan below Jezreel, from Beth Shan to Abel Meholah across to Jokmeam;
13 Ben-geber, in Ra'moth-gil'ead (he had the villages of Ja'ir the son of Manas'seh, which are in Gilead, and he had the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls and bronze bars); 13 Ben-Geber--in Ramoth Gilead (the settlements of Jair son of Manasseh in Gilead were his, as well as the district of Argob in Bashan and its sixty large walled cities with bronze gate bars);
14 Ahin'adab the son of Iddo, in Mahana'im; 14 Ahinadab son of Iddo--in Mahanaim;
15 Ahi'ma-az, in Naph'tali (he had taken Bas'emath the daughter of Solomon as his wife); 15 Ahimaaz--in Naphtali (he had married Basemath daughter of Solomon);
16 Ba'ana the son of Hushai, in Asher and Bealoth; 16 Baana son of Hushai--in Asher and in Aloth;
17 Jehosh'aphat the son of Paru'ah, in Is'sachar; 17 Jehoshaphat son of Paruah--in Issachar;
18 Shim'e-i the son of Ela, in Benjamin; 18 Shimei son of Ela--in Benjamin;
19 Geber the son of Uri, in the land of Gilead, the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and of Og king of Bashan. And there was one officer in the land of Judah. 19 Geber son of Uri--in Gilead (the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and the country of Og king of Bashan). He was the only governor over the district.
20 Judah and Israel were as many as the sand by the sea; they ate and drank and were happy. 20 The people of Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand on the seashore; they ate, they drank and they were happy.
21 Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the Euphra'tes to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt; they brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life. 21 And Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the River to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. These countries brought tribute and were Solomon's subjects all his life.
22 Solomon's provision for one day was thirty cors of fine flour, and sixty cors of meal, 22 Solomon's daily provisions were thirty cors of fine flour and sixty cors of meal,
23 ten fat oxen, and twenty pasture-fed cattle, a hundred sheep, besides harts, gazelles, roebucks, and fatted fowl. 23 ten head of stall-fed cattle, twenty of pasture-fed cattle and a hundred sheep and goats, as well as deer, gazelles, roebucks and choice fowl.
24 For he had dominion over all the region west of the Euphra'tes from Tiphsah to Gaza, over all the kings west of the Euphra'tes; and he had peace on all sides round about him. 24 For he ruled over all the kingdoms west of the River, from Tiphsah to Gaza, and had peace on all sides.
25 And Judah and Israel dwelt in safety, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, all the days of Solomon. 25 During Solomon's lifetime Judah and Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, lived in safety, each man under his own vine and fig tree.
26 Solomon also had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen. 26 Solomon had four thousand stalls for chariot horses, and twelve thousand horses.
27 And those officers supplied provisions for King Solomon, and for all who came to King Solomon's table, each one in his month; they let nothing be lacking. 27 The district officers, each in his month, supplied provisions for King Solomon and all who came to the king's table. They saw to it that nothing was lacking.
28 Barley also and straw for the horses and swift steeds they brought to the place where it was required, each according to his charge. 28 They also brought to the proper place their quotas of barley and straw for the chariot horses and the other horses.
29 And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding beyond measure, and largeness of mind like the sand on the seashore, 29 God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore.
30 so that Solomon's wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the people of the east, and all the wisdom of Egypt. 30 Solomon's wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the men of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt.
31 For he was wiser than all other men, wiser than Ethan the Ez'rahite, and Heman, Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol; and his fame was in all the nations round about. 31 He was wiser than any other man, including Ethan the Ezrahite--wiser than Heman, Calcol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations.
32 He also uttered three thousand proverbs; and his songs were a thousand and five. 32 He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five.
33 He spoke of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of the wall; he spoke also of beasts, and of birds, and of reptiles, and of fish. 33 He described plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls. He also taught about animals and birds, reptiles and fish.
34 And men came from all peoples to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and from all the kings of the earth, who had heard of his wisdom. 34 Men of all nations came to listen to Solomon's wisdom, sent by all the kings of the world, who had heard of his wisdom.
