Complete Jewish Bible (CJB) New International Version (NIV)
Therefore, I urge the congregation leaders among you, as a fellow-leader and witness to the Messiah's sufferings, as well as a sharer in the glory to be revealed: 1 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed:
shepherd the flock of God that is in your care, exercising oversight not out of constraint, but willingly, as God wants; and not out of a desire for dishonest gain, but with enthusiasm; 2 Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers--not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve;
also not as machers domineering over those in your care, but as people who become examples to the flock. 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
Then, when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive glory as your unfading crown. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
Likewise, you who are less experienced, submit to leaders. Further, all of you should clothe yourselves in humility toward one another, because God opposes the arrogant, but to the humble he gives grace. 5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."
Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that at the right time he may lift you up. 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.
Throw all your anxieties upon him, because he cares about you. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Stay sober, stay alert! Your enemy, the Adversary, stalks about like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
Stand against him, firm in your trust, knowing that your brothers throughout the world are going through the same kinds of suffering. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
You will have to suffer only a little while; after that, God, who is full of grace, the one who called you to his eternal glory in union with the Messiah, will himself restore, establish and strengthen you and make you firm. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
To him be the power forever and ever. Amen. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
Through Sila, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written you briefly, encouraging you and giving my witness that this is God's true grace. Stand firm in it! 12 With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.
Your sister congregation in Bavel, chosen along with you, sends greetings to you, as does my son Mark. 13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.
Greet each other with a kiss of love. "Shalom aleikhem!" to all who belong to the Messiah. 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
