So then, brothers and sisters, we ask and encourage you in the Lord Jesus to keep living the way you already are and even do better in how you live and please God—just as you learned from us. 1 Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.
You know the instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
God's will is that your lives are dedicated to him. This means that you stay away from sexual immorality 3 It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
and learn how to control your own body in a pure and respectable way. 4 that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
Don't be controlled by your sexual urges like the Gentiles who don't know God. 5 not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;
No one should mistreat or take advantage of their brother or sister in this issue. The Lord punishes people for all these things, as we told you before and sternly warned you. 6 and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you.
God didn't call us to be immoral but to be dedicated to him. 7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.
Therefore, whoever rejects these instructions isn't rejecting a human authority. They are rejecting God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you. 8 Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.
You don't need us to write about loving your brothers and sisters because God has already taught you to love each other. 9 Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.
In fact, you are doing loving deeds for all the brothers and sisters throughout Macedonia. Now we encourage you, brothers and sisters, to do so even more. 10 And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more.
Aim to live quietly, mind your own business, and earn your own living, just as I told you. 11 Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you,
That way you'll behave appropriately toward outsiders, and you won't be in need. 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
Brothers and sisters, we want you to know about people who have died so that you won't mourn like others who don't have any hope. 13 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.
Since we believe that Jesus died and rose, so we also believe that God will bring with him those who have died in Jesus. 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
What we are saying is a message from the Lord: we who are alive and still around at the Lord's coming definitely won't go ahead of those who have died. 15 According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.
This is because the Lord himself will come down from heaven with the signal of a shout by the head angel and a blast on God's trumpet. First, those who are dead in Christ will rise. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
Then, we who are living and still around will be taken up together with them in the clouds to meet with the Lord in the air. That way we will always be with the Lord. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
So encourage each other with these words. 18 Therefore encourage each other with these words.
