Common English Bible (CEB) New International Version (NIV)
We don't need to write to you about the timing and dates, brothers and sisters. 1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you,
You know very well that the day of the Lord is going to come like a thief in the night. 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
When they are saying, "There is peace and security," at that time sudden destruction will attack them, like labor pains start with a pregnant woman, and they definitely won't escape. 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
But you aren't in darkness, brothers and sisters, so the day won't catch you by surprise like a thief. 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.
All of you are children of light and children of the day. We don't belong to night or darkness. 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
So then, let's not sleep like the others, but let's stay awake and stay sober. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled.
People who sleep sleep at night, and people who get drunk get drunk at night. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.
Since we belong to the day, let's stay sober, wearing faithfulness and love as a piece of armor that protects our body and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
God didn't intend for us to suffer his wrath but rather to possess salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with him. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.
So continue encouraging each other and building each other up, just like you are doing already. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Brothers and sisters, we ask you to respect those who are working with you, leading you, and instructing you. 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you.
Think of them highly with love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.
Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are disorderly. Comfort the discouraged. Help the weak. Be patient with everyone. 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
Make sure no one repays a wrong with a wrong, but always pursue the good for each other and everyone else. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.
Rejoice always. 16 Be joyful always;
Pray continually. 17 pray continually;
Give thanks in every situation because this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
Don't suppress the Spirit. 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire;
Don't brush off Spirit-inspired messages, 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt.
but examine everything carefully and hang on to what is good. 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good.
Avoid every kind of evil. 22 Avoid every kind of evil.
Now, may the God of peace himself cause you to be completely dedicated to him; and may your spirit, soul, and body be kept intact and blameless at our Lord Jesus Christ's coming. 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The one who is calling you is faithful and will do this. 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.
Brothers and sisters, pray for us. 25 Brothers, pray for us.
Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss. 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.
By the Lord's authority, I order all of you to have this letter read aloud to all the brothers and sisters. 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
