| Weymouth New Testament (WNT) | New International Version (NIV) |
| 1 I exhort then, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be offered on behalf of all men; | 1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone-- |
| 2 including kings and all who are in high station, in order that we may live peaceful and tranquil lives with all godliness and gravity. | 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. |
| 3 This is right, and is pleasing in the sight of God our Saviour, | 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, |
| 4 who is willing for all mankind to be saved and come to a full knowledge of the truth. | 4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. |
| 5 For there is but one God and but one Mediator between God and men--Christ Jesus, Himself man; | 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, |
| 6 who gave Himself as the redemption price for all--a fact testified to at its own appointed time, | 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men--the testimony given in its proper time. |
| 7 and of which I have been appointed a herald and an Apostle (I am speaking the truth: it is not a fiction), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. | 7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle--I am telling the truth, I am not lying--and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles. |
| 8 So then I would have the men everywhere pray, lifting to God holy hands which are unstained with anger or strife; | 8 I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing. |
| 9 and I would have the women dress becomingly, with modesty and self-control, not with plaited hair or gold or pearls or costly clothes, | 9 I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, |
| 10 but--as befits women making a claim to godliness--with the ornament of good works. | 10 but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. |
| 11 A woman should quietly learn from others with entire submissiveness. | 11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. |
| 12 I do not permit a woman to teach, nor have authority over a man, but she must remain silent. | 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. |
| 13 For Adam was formed first, and then Eve; | 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. |
| 14 and Adam was not deceived, but his wife was thoroughly deceived, and so became involved in transgression. | 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. |
| 15 Yet a woman will be brought safely through childbirth if she and her husband continue to live in faith and love and growing holiness, with habitual self-restraint. | 15 But women will be saved through childbearing--if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. |
