I will come to you for the third time. "Every case must be proved by two or three witnesses." 1 This will be my third visit to you. "Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses."
When I was with you the second time, I gave a warning to those who had sinned. Now I am away from you, and I give a warning to all the others. When I come to you again, I will not be easy with them. 2 I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent: On my return I will not spare those who sinned earlier or any of the others,
You want proof that Christ is speaking through me. My proof is that he is not weak among you, but he is powerful. 3 since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you.
It is true that he was weak when he was killed on the cross, but he lives now by God's power. It is true that we are weak in Christ, but for you we will be alive in Christ by God's power. 4 For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by God's power. Likewise, we are weak in him, yet by God's power we will live with him to serve you.
Look closely at yourselves. Test yourselves to see if you are living in the faith. You know that Jesus Christ is in you -- unless you fail the test. 5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you--unless, of course, you fail the test?
But I hope you will see that we ourselves have not failed the test. 6 And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test.
We pray to God that you will not do anything wrong. It is not important to see that we have passed the test, but it is important that you do what is right, even if it seems we have failed. 7 Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong. Not that people will see that we have stood the test but that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed.
We cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. 8 For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.
We are happy to be weak, if you are strong, and we pray that you will become complete. 9 We are glad whenever we are weak but you are strong; and our prayer is for your perfection.
I am writing this while I am away from you so that when I come I will not have to be harsh in my use of authority. The Lord gave me this authority to build you up, not to tear you down. 10 This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority--the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.
Now, brothers and sisters, I say good-bye. Try to be complete. Do what I have asked you to do. Agree with each other, and live in peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you. 11 Finally, brothers, good-by. Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.
Greet each other with a holy kiss. 12 Greet one another with a holy kiss.
All of God's holy people send greetings to you. 13 All the saints send their greetings.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
