So I decided that, for my own sake, I wouldn't visit you again while I was upset. 1 So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you.
If I make you sad, who will be there to make me glad when you are sad because of me? 2 For if I grieve you, who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved?
That's why I wrote this very thing to you, so that when I came I wouldn't be made sad by the ones who ought to make me happy. I have confidence in you, that my happiness means your happiness. 3 I wrote as I did so that when I came I should not be distressed by those who ought to make me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy.
I wrote to you in tears, with a very troubled and anxious heart. I didn't write to make you sad but so you would know the overwhelming love that I have for you. 4 For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.
But if someone has made anyone sad, that person hasn't hurt me but all of you to some degree (not to exaggerate). 5 If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you, to some extent--not to put it too severely.
The punishment handed out by the majority is enough for this person. 6 The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him.
This is why you should try your best to forgive and to comfort this person now instead, so that this person isn't overwhelmed by too much sorrow. 7 Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.
So I encourage you to show your love for this person. 8 I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.
This is another reason why I wrote you. I wanted to test you and see if you are obedient in everything. 9 The reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.
If you forgive anyone for anything, I do too. And whatever I've forgiven (if I've forgiven anything), I did it for you in the presence of Christ. 10 If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven--if there was anything to forgive--I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake,
This is so that we won't be taken advantage of by Satan, because we are well aware of his schemes. 11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.
When I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, the Lord gave me an opportunity to preach. 12 Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me,
But I was worried because I couldn't find my brother Titus there. So I said good-bye to them and went on to Macedonia. 13 I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said good-by to them and went on to Macedonia.
But thank God, who is always leading us around through Christ as if we were in a parade. He releases the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere through us. 14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.
We smell like the aroma of Christ's offering to God, both to those who are being saved and to those who are on the road to destruction. 15 For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.
We smell like a contagious dead person to those who are dying, but we smell like the fountain of life to those who are being saved. Who is qualified for this kind of ministry? 16 To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?
We aren't like so many people who hustle the word of God to make a profit. We are speaking through Christ in the presence of God, as those who are sincere and as those who are sent from God. 17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men sent from God.
