Young's Literal Translation (YLT) New International Version (NIV)
And I decided this to myself, not again to come in sorrow unto you, 1 So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you.
for if I make you sorry, then who is he who is making me glad, except he who is made sorry by me? 2 For if I grieve you, who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved?
and I wrote to you this same thing, that having come, I may not have sorrow from them of whom it behoved me to have joy, having confidence in you all, that my joy is of you all, 3 I wrote as I did so that when I came I should not be distressed by those who ought to make me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy.
for out of much tribulation and pressure of heart I wrote to you through many tears, not that ye might be made sorry, but that ye might know the love that I have more abundantly toward you. 4 For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.
And if any one hath caused sorrow, he hath not caused sorrow to me, but in part, that I may not burden you all; 5 If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you, to some extent--not to put it too severely.
sufficient to such a one is this punishment, that [is] by the more part, 6 The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him.
so that, on the contrary, [it is] rather for you to forgive and to comfort, lest by over abundant sorrow such a one may be swallowed up; 7 Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.
wherefore, I call upon you to confirm love to him, 8 I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.
for, for this also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether in regard to all things ye are obedient. 9 The reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.
And to whom ye forgive anything -- I also; for I also, if I have forgiven anything, to whom I have forgiven [it], because of you -- in the person of Christ -- [I forgive it,] 10 If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven--if there was anything to forgive--I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake,
that we may not be over-reached by the Adversary, for of his devices we are not ignorant. 11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.
And having come to Troas for the good news of the Christ, and a door to me having been opened in the Lord, 12 Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me,
I have not had rest to my spirit, on my not finding Titus my brother, but having taken leave of them, I went forth to Macedonia; 13 I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said good-by to them and went on to Macedonia.
and to God [are] thanks, who at all times is leading us in triumph in the Christ, and the fragrance of His knowledge He is manifesting through us in every place, 14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.
because of Christ a sweet fragrance we are to God, in those being saved, and in those being lost; 15 For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.
to the one, indeed, a fragrance of death to death, and to the other, a fragrance of life to life; and for these things who is sufficient? 16 To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?
for we are not as the many, adulterating the word of God, but as of sincerity -- but as of God; in the presence of God, in Christ we do speak. 17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men sent from God.
