American Standard Version (ASV) New International Version (NIV)
The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not I only, but also all they that know the truth; 1 The elder, To the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in the truth--and not I only, but also all who know the truth--
for the truth's sake which abideth in us, and it shall be with us for ever: 2 because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever:
Grace, mercy, peace shall be with us, from God the Father, and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. 3 Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father's Son, will be with us in truth and love.
I rejoice greatly that I have found [certain] of thy children walking in truth, even as we received commandment from the Father. 4 It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us.
And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote to thee a new commandment, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. 5 And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another.
And this is love, that we should walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, even as ye heard from the beginning, that ye should walk in it. 6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.
For many deceivers are gone forth into the world, [even] they that confess not that Jesus Christ cometh in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. 7 Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.
Look to yourselves, that ye lose not the things which we have wrought, but that ye receive a full reward. 8 Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.
Whosoever goeth onward and abideth not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God: he that abideth in the teaching, the same hath both the Father and the Son. 9 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.
If any one cometh unto you, and bringeth not this teaching, receive him not into [your] house, and give him no greeting: 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him.
for he that giveth him greeting partaketh in his evil works. 11 Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work.
Having many things to write unto you, I would not [write them] with paper and ink: but I hope to come unto you, and to speak face to face, that your joy may be made full. 12 I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.
The children of thine elect sister salute thee. 13 The children of your chosen sister send their greetings.
