| 1 But be certain of this, that in the last days times of trouble will come. | 1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. |
| 2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, uplifted in pride, given to bitter words, going against the authority of their fathers, never giving praise, having no religion, | 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, |
| 3 Without natural love, bitter haters, saying evil of others, violent and uncontrolled, hating all good, | 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, |
| 4 False to their friends, acting without thought, lifted up in mind, loving pleasure more than God; | 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-- |
| 5 Having a form of religion, but turning their backs on the power of it: go not with these. | 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. |
| 6 For these are they who go secretly into houses, making prisoners of foolish women, weighted down with sin, turned from the way by their evil desires, | 6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, |
| 7 Ever learning, and never coming to the knowledge of what is true. | 7 always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. |
| 8 And as James and Jambres went against Moses, so do these go against what is true: men of evil minds, who, tested by faith, are seen to be false. | 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth--men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. |
| 9 But they will go no farther: for their foolish behaviour will be clear to all men, as theirs was in the end. | 9 But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone. |
| 10 But you took as your example my teaching, behaviour, purpose, and faith; my long waiting, my love, my quiet undergoing of trouble; | 10 You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, |
| 11 My punishments and pain; the things which came to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; the cruel attacks made on me: and the Lord made me free from them all. | 11 persecutions, sufferings--what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. |
| 12 Yes, and all whose purpose is to be living in the knowledge of God in Christ Jesus, will be cruelly attacked. | 12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, |
| 13 Evil and false men will become worse and worse, using deceit and themselves overcome by deceit. | 13 while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. |
| 14 But see that you keep to the teaching you have been given and the things of which you are certain, conscious of who has been your teacher; | 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, |
| 15 And that from the time when you were a child, you have had knowledge of the holy Writings, which are able to make you wise to salvation, through faith in Christ Jesus. | 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. |
| 16 Every holy Writing which comes from God is of profit for teaching, for training, for guiding, for education in righteousness: | 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, |
| 17 So that the man of God may be complete, trained and made ready for every good work. | 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. |
