New Century Version (NCV) New International Version (NIV)
I give you a command in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, the One who will judge the living and the dead, and by his coming and his kingdom: 1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:
Preach the Good News. Be ready at all times, and tell people what they need to do. Tell them when they are wrong. Encourage them with great patience and careful teaching, 2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction.
because the time will come when people will not listen to the true teaching but will find many more teachers who please them by saying the things they want to hear. 3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
They will stop listening to the truth and will begin to follow false stories. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
But you should control yourself at all times, accept troubles, do the work of telling the Good News, and complete all the duties of a servant of God. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
My life is being given as an offering to God, and the time has come for me to leave this life. 6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Now, a crown is being held for me -- a crown for being right with God. The Lord, the judge who judges rightly, will give the crown to me on that dayn -- not only to me but to all those who have waited with love for him to come again. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
Do your best to come to me as soon as you can, 9 Do your best to come to me quickly,
because Demas, who loved this world, left me and went to Thessalonica. Crescens went to Galatia, and Titus went to Dalmatia. 10 for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.
Luke is the only one still with me. Get Mark and bring him with you when you come, because he can help me in my work here. 11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry.
I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 12 I sent Tychicus to Ephesus.
When I was in Troas, I left my coat there with Carpus. So when you come, bring it to me, along with my books, particularly the ones written on parchment. 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments.
Alexander the metalworker did many harmful things against me. The Lord will punish him for what he did. 14 Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done.
You also should be careful that he does not hurt you, because he fought strongly against our teaching. 15 You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message.
The first time I defended myself, no one helped me; everyone left me. May they be forgiven. 16 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.
But the Lord stayed with me and gave me strength so I could fully tell the Good News to all those who are not Jews. So I was saved from the lion's mouth. 17 But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion's mouth.
The Lord will save me when anyone tries to hurt me, and he will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. Glory forever and ever be the Lord's. Amen. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Greet Priscilla and Aquila and the family of Onesiphorus. 19 Greet Priscilla and Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus.
Erastus stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus sick in Miletus. 20 Erastus stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus sick in Miletus.
Try as hard as you can to come to me before winter. Eubulus sends greetings to you. Also Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brothers and sisters in Christ greet you. 21 Do your best to get here before winter. Eubulus greets you, and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers.
The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you. 22 The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.
