This will be my third visit to you. Scripture says, "Every matter must be proved by the words of two or three witnesses."#1(Deuteronomy 19:15)#2 1 This will be my third visit to you. "Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses."
I already warned you during my second visit. I now say it again while I'm away. When I return, I won't spare those who sinned earlier. I won't spare any of the others either. 2 I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent: On my return I will not spare those who sinned earlier or any of the others,
You are asking me to prove that Christ is speaking through me. He is not weak in dealing with you. He is powerful among you. 3 since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you.
It is true that Christ was nailed to the cross because he was weak. But he lives by God's power. In the same way, I share his weakness. But by God's power I will live with him to serve you. 4 For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by God's power. Likewise, we are weak in him, yet by God's power we will live with him to serve you.
Take a good look at yourselves to see if you are really believers. Test yourselves. Don't you realize that Christ Jesus is in you? Unless, of course, you fail the test! 5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you--unless, of course, you fail the test?
I hope you will discover that I haven't failed the test. 6 And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test.
I pray to God that you won't do anything wrong. I don't pray so that people will see that I have passed the test. Instead, I pray so that you will do what is right, even if it seems I have failed. 7 Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong. Not that people will see that we have stood the test but that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed.
I can't do anything to stop the truth. I can only work for the truth. 8 For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.
I'm glad when I am weak but you are strong. I pray that you will become perfect. 9 We are glad whenever we are weak but you are strong; and our prayer is for your perfection.
That's why I write these things before I come to you. Then when I do come, I won't have to be hard on you when I use my authority. The Lord gave me the authority to build you up. He didn't give it to me to tear you down. 10 This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority--the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.
Finally, brothers and sisters, good-by. Try to be perfect. Pay attention to what I'm saying. Agree with one another. Live in peace. And the God who gives love and peace will be with you. 11 Finally, brothers, good-by. Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.
Greet one another with a holy kiss. 12 Greet one another with a holy kiss.
All of God's people send their greetings. 13 All the saints send their greetings.
May the grace shown by the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love that God has given us, and the sharing of life brought about by the Holy Spirit be with you all. 14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
