Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
So I made up my mind not to come to you again to make you sad. 1 So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you.
For if I were to make you sad, who would be left to cheer me up? Only the very persons I had made sad. 2 For if I grieve you, who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved?
That is why I wrote that letter to you - I did not want to come to you and be made sad by the very people who should make me glad. For I am convinced that when I am happy, then all of you are happy too. 3 I wrote as I did so that when I came I should not be distressed by those who ought to make me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy.
I wrote you with a greatly troubled and distressed heart and with many tears; my purpose was not to make you sad, but to make you realize how much I love you all. 4 For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.
Now, if anyone has made somebody sad, he has not done it to me but to all of you - in part, at least. (I say this because I do not want to be too hard on him.) 5 If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you, to some extent--not to put it too severely.
It is enough that this person has been punished in this way by most of you. 6 The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him.
Now, however, you should forgive him and encourage him, in order to keep him from becoming so sad as to give up completely. 7 Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.
And so I beg you to let him know that you really do love him. 8 I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.
I wrote you that letter because I wanted to find out how well you had stood the test and whether you are always ready to obey my instructions. 9 The reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.
When you forgive people for what they have done, I forgive them too. For when I forgive - if, indeed, I need to forgive anything - I do it in Christ's presence because of you, 10 If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven--if there was anything to forgive--I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake,
in order to keep Satan from getting the upper hand over us; for we know what his plans are. 11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.
When I arrived in Troas to preach the Good News about Christ, I found that the Lord had opened the way for the work there. 12 Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me,
But I was deeply worried, because I could not find our brother Titus. So I said good-bye to the people there and went on to Macedonia. 13 I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said good-by to them and went on to Macedonia.
But thanks be to God! For in union with Christ we are always led by God as prisoners in Christ's victory procession. God uses us to make the knowledge about Christ spread everywhere like a sweet fragrance. 14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.
For we are like a sweet-smelling incense offered by Christ to God, which spreads among those who are being saved and those who are being lost. 15 For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.
For those who are being lost, it is a deadly stench that kills; but for those who are being saved, it is a fragrance that brings life. Who, then, is capable for such a task? 16 To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?
We are not like so many others, who handle God's message as if it were cheap merchandise; but because God has sent us, we speak with sincerity in his presence, as servants of Christ. 17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men sent from God.
