English Standard Version (ESV) New International Version (NIV)
We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, 1 And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches.
for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 2 Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.
For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, 3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own,
begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints-- 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints.
and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. 5 And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will.
