New King James Version (NKJV) New International Version (NIV)
Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: 1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:
Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;
to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;
to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 7 and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.
For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. 9 But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.
Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 10 Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall,
for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth. 12 So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have.
Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you, 13 I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body,
knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me. 14 because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.
Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease. 15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.
For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 16 We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." 17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."
And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.
And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 19 And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation.
for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
