New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
This is my second letter to you, dear friends, and in both of them I have tried to stimulate your wholesome thinking and refresh your memory. 1 Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking.
I want you to remember and understand what the holy prophets said long ago and what our Lord and Savior commanded through your apostles. 2 I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.
First, I want to remind you that in the last days there will be scoffers who will laugh at the truth and do every evil thing they desire. 3 First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.
This will be their argument: "Jesus promised to come back, did he? Then where is he? Why, as far back as anyone can remember, everything has remained exactly the same since the world was first created." 4 They will say, "Where is this 'coming' he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation."
They deliberately forget that God made the heavens by the word of his command, and he brought the earth up from the water and surrounded it with water. 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water.
Then he used the water to destroy the world with a mighty flood. 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.
And God has also commanded that the heavens and the earth will be consumed by fire on the day of judgment, when ungodly people will perish. 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
But you must not forget, dear friends, that a day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. 8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise to return, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to perish, so he is giving more time for everyone to repent. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and everything in them will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be exposed to judgment. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.
Since everything around us is going to melt away, what holy, godly lives you should be living! 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives
You should look forward to that day and hurry it along -- the day when God will set the heavens on fire and the elements will melt away in the flames. 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.
But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world where everyone is right with God. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.
And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to live a pure and blameless life. And be at peace with God. 14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.
And remember, the Lord is waiting so that people have time to be saved. This is just as our beloved brother Paul wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him -- 15 Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.
speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters around to mean something quite different from what he meant, just as they do the other parts of Scripture -- and the result is disaster for them. 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
I am warning you ahead of time, dear friends, so that you can watch out and not be carried away by the errors of these wicked people. I don't want you to lose your own secure footing. 17 Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position.
But grow in the special favor and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be all glory and honor, both now and forevermore. Amen. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.
