For this they willfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth compacted out of water and amidst water, by the word of God; 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water.
by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.
but the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
But forget not this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.
Seeing that these things are thus all to be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in [all] holy living and godliness, 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives
looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.
But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.
Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for these things, give diligence that ye may be found in peace, without spot and blameless in his sight. 14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.
And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote unto you; 15 Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.
