Bible in Basic English (BBE) New International Version (NIV)
But be certain of this, that in the last days times of trouble will come. 1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.
For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, uplifted in pride, given to bitter words, going against the authority of their fathers, never giving praise, having no religion, 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
Without natural love, bitter haters, saying evil of others, violent and uncontrolled, hating all good, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good,
False to their friends, acting without thought, lifted up in mind, loving pleasure more than God; 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God--
Having a form of religion, but turning their backs on the power of it: go not with these. 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.
For these are they who go secretly into houses, making prisoners of foolish women, weighted down with sin, turned from the way by their evil desires, 6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires,
Ever learning, and never coming to the knowledge of what is true. 7 always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.
And as James and Jambres went against Moses, so do these go against what is true: men of evil minds, who, tested by faith, are seen to be false. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth--men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected.
But they will go no farther: for their foolish behaviour will be clear to all men, as theirs was in the end. 9 But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.
But you took as your example my teaching, behaviour, purpose, and faith; my long waiting, my love, my quiet undergoing of trouble; 10 You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance,
My punishments and pain; the things which came to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; the cruel attacks made on me: and the Lord made me free from them all. 11 persecutions, sufferings--what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.
Yes, and all whose purpose is to be living in the knowledge of God in Christ Jesus, will be cruelly attacked. 12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
Evil and false men will become worse and worse, using deceit and themselves overcome by deceit. 13 while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
But see that you keep to the teaching you have been given and the things of which you are certain, conscious of who has been your teacher; 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,
And that from the time when you were a child, you have had knowledge of the holy Writings, which are able to make you wise to salvation, through faith in Christ Jesus. 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
Every holy Writing which comes from God is of profit for teaching, for training, for guiding, for education in righteousness: 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
So that the man of God may be complete, trained and made ready for every good work. 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
