New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
You should also know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.
For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control; they will be cruel and have no interest in what is good. 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good,
They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God--
They will act as if they are religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. You must stay away from people like that. 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.
They are the kind who work their way into people's homes and win the confidence of vulnerable women who are burdened with the guilt of sin and controlled by many desires. 6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires,
Such women are forever following new teachings, but they never understand the truth. 7 always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.
And these teachers fight the truth just as Jannes and Jambres fought against Moses. Their minds are depraved, and their faith is counterfeit. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth--men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected.
But they won't get away with this for long. Someday everyone will recognize what fools they are, just as happened with Jannes and Jambres. 9 But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.
But you know what I teach, Timothy, and how I live, and what my purpose in life is. You know my faith and how long I have suffered. You know my love and my patient endurance. 10 You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance,
You know how much persecution and suffering I have endured. You know all about how I was persecuted in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra -- but the Lord delivered me from all of it. 11 persecutions, sufferings--what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.
Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will go on deceiving others, and they themselves will be deceived. 13 while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,
You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
It is God's way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do. 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
