New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
And so I solemnly urge you before God and before Christ Jesus -- who will someday judge the living and the dead when he appears to set up his Kingdom: 1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:
Preach the word of God. Be persistent, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching. 2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction.
For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to right teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever they want to hear. 3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
They will reject the truth and follow strange myths. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don't be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at bringing others to Christ. Complete the ministry God has given you. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near. 6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
And now the prize awaits me -- the crown of righteousness that the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that great day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his glorious return. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
Please come as soon as you can. 9 Do your best to come to me quickly,
Demas has deserted me because he loves the things of this life and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus has gone to Dalmatia. 10 for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.
Only Luke is with me. Bring Mark with you when you come, for he will be helpful to me. 11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry.
I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 12 I sent Tychicus to Ephesus.
When you come, be sure to bring the coat I left with Carpus at Troas. Also bring my books, and especially my papers. 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments.
Alexander the coppersmith has done me much harm, but the Lord will judge him for what he has done. 14 Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done.
Be careful of him, for he fought against everything we said. 15 You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message.
The first time I was brought before the judge, no one was with me. Everyone had abandoned me. I hope it will not be counted against them. 16 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.
But the Lord stood with me and gave me strength, that I might preach the Good News in all its fullness for all the Gentiles to hear. And he saved me from certain death. 17 But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion's mouth.
Yes, and the Lord will deliver me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly Kingdom. To God be the glory forever and ever. Amen. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Give my greetings to Priscilla and Aquila and those living at the household of Onesiphorus. 19 Greet Priscilla and Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus.
Erastus stayed at Corinth, and I left Trophimus sick at Miletus. 20 Erastus stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus sick in Miletus.
Hurry so you can get here before winter. Eubulus sends you greetings, and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brothers and sisters. 21 Do your best to get here before winter. Eubulus greets you, and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers.
May the Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you all. 22 The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.
