World English Bible (WEB) New International Version (NIV)
The whole earth was of one language and of one speech. 1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.
It happened, as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they lived there. 2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
They said one to another, "Come, let's make brick, and burn them thoroughly." They had brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar. 3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
They said, "Come, let's build us a city, and a tower, whose top reaches to the sky, and let's make us a name; lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth." 4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built. 5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.
Yahweh said, "Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is what they begin to do. Now nothing will be withheld from them, which they intend to do. 6 The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
Come, let's go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech." 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."
So Yahweh scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city. 8 So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
Therefore the name of it was called Babel, because Yahweh confused the language of all the earth, there. From there, Yahweh scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth. 9 That is why it was called Babel--because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
This is the history of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old, and became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood. 10 This is the account of Shem. Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father of Arphaxad.
Shem lived after he became the father of Arpachshad five hundred years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 11 And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.
Arpachshad lived thirty-five years, and became the father of Shelah. 12 When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah.
Arpachshad lived after he became the father of Shelah four hundred three years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 13 And after he became the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
Shelah lived thirty years, and became the father of Eber: 14 When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber.
and Shelah lived after he became the father of Eber four hundred three years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 15 And after he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
Eber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg. 16 When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg.
Eber lived after he became the father of Peleg four hundred thirty years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 17 And after he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.
Peleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Reu. 18 When Peleg had lived 30 years, he became the father of Reu.
Peleg lived after he became the father of Reu two hundred nine years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 19 And after he became the father of Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and had other sons and daughters.
Reu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug. 20 When Reu had lived 32 years, he became the father of Serug.
Reu lived after he became the father of Serug two hundred seven years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 21 And after he became the father of Serug, Reu lived 207 years and had other sons and daughters.
Serug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nahor. 22 When Serug had lived 30 years, he became the father of Nahor.
Serug lived after he became the father of Nahor two hundred years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 23 And after he became the father of Nahor, Serug lived 200 years and had other sons and daughters.
Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of Terah. 24 When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah.
Nahor lived after he became the father of Terah one hundred nineteen years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 25 And after he became the father of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters.
Terah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. 26 After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.
Now this is the history of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran became the father of Lot. 27 This is the account of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.
Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees. 28 While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, in the land of his birth.
Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran who was also the father of Iscah. 29 Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah; she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah and Iscah.
Sarai was barren. She had no child. 30 Now Sarai was barren; she had no children.
Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of Haran, his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife. They went forth from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan. They came to Haran, and lived there. 31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.
The days of Terah were two hundred five years. Terah died in Haran. 32 Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Haran.
