The vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. 1 The vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
Listen, heavens, and pay attention, earth, for the Lord has spoken: "I have raised children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against Me. 2 Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! For the LORD has spoken: "I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.
The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master's feeding-trough, [but] Israel does not know; My people do not understand." 3 The ox knows his master, the donkey his owner's manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand."
Oh-sinful nation, people weighed down with iniquity, brood of evildoers, depraved children! They have abandoned the Lord; they have despised the Holy One of Israel; they have turned their backs [on Him]. 4 Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him.
Why do you want more beatings? Why do you keep on rebelling? The whole head is hurt, and the whole heart is sick. 5 Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted.
From the sole of the foot even to the head, no spot is uninjured- wounds, welts, and festering sores not cleansed, bandaged, or soothed with oil. 6 From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness-- only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with oil.
Your land is desolate, your cities burned with fire; before your very eyes foreigners devour your fields- a desolation overthrown by foreigners. 7 Your country is desolate, your cities burned with fire; your fields are being stripped by foreigners right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.
Daughter Zion is abandoned like a shelter in a vineyard, like a shack in a cucumber field, like a besieged city. 8 The Daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a field of melons, like a city under siege.
If the Lord of Hosts had not left us a few survivors, we would be like Sodom, we would resemble Gomorrah. 9 Unless the LORD Almighty had left us some survivors, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah.
Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom! Listen to the instruction of our God, you people of Gomorrah! 10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah!
"What are all your sacrifices to Me?" asks the Lord. "I have had enough of burnt offerings and rams and the fat of well-fed cattle; I have no desire for the blood of bulls, lambs, or male goats. 11 "The multitude of your sacrifices-- what are they to me?" says the LORD. "I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.
When you come to appear before Me, who requires this from you- [this] trampling of My courts? 12 When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts?
Stop bringing useless offerings. I despise [your] incense. New Moons and Sabbaths, and the calling of solemn assemblies- I cannot stand iniquity with a festival. 13 Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations-- I cannot bear your evil assemblies.
I hate your New Moons and prescribed festivals. They have become a burden to Me; I am tired of putting up with [them]. 14 Your New Moon festivals and your appointed feasts my soul hates. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them.
When you lift up your hands [in prayer], I will refuse to look at you; even if you offer countless prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood. 15 When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood;
"Wash yourselves. Cleanse yourselves. Remove your evil deeds from My sight. Stop doing evil. 16 wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong,
Learn to do what is good. Seek justice. Correct the oppressor. Defend the rights of the fatherless. Plead the widow's cause. 17 learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.
"Come, let us discuss this," says the Lord. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are as red as crimson, they will be like wool. 18 "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.
If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land. 19 If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land;
But if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword." For the mouth of the Lord has spoken. 20 but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword." For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
The faithful city- what an adulteress she has become! She was once full of justice. Righteousness once dwelt in her- but now, murderers! 21 See how the faithful city has become a harlot! She once was full of justice; righteousness used to dwell in her-- but now murderers!
Your silver has become dross, your beer is diluted with water. 22 Your silver has become dross, your choice wine is diluted with water.
Your rulers are rebels, friends of thieves. They all love graft and chase after bribes. They do not defend the rights of the fatherless, and the widow's case never comes before them." 23 Your rulers are rebels, companions of thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow's case does not come before them.
Therefore the Lord God of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, declares: "Ah, I will gain satisfaction against My foes; I will take revenge against My enemies. 24 Therefore the Lord, the LORD Almighty, the Mighty One of Israel, declares: "Ah, I will get relief from my foes and avenge myself on my enemies.
I will turn My hand against you and will burn away your dross completely; I will remove all your impurities. 25 I will turn my hand against you; I will thoroughly purge away your dross and remove all your impurities.
I will restore your judges to what they once were, and your advisers to their former state. Afterwards you will be called the Righteous City, a Faithful City." 26 I will restore your judges as in days of old, your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City."
Zion will be redeemed by justice, her repentant ones by righteousness. 27 Zion will be redeemed with justice, her penitent ones with righteousness.
But both rebels and sinners will be destroyed, and those who abandon the Lord will perish. 28 But rebels and sinners will both be broken, and those who forsake the LORD will perish.
Indeed, they will be ashamed of the sacred trees you desired, and you will be embarrassed because of the gardens you have chosen. 29 "You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be disgraced because of the gardens that you have chosen.
For you will become like an oak whose leaves are withered, and like a garden without water. 30 You will be like an oak with fading leaves, like a garden without water.
The strong one will become tinder, and his work a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench [the flames]. 31 The mighty man will become tinder and his work a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the fire."
