Common English Bible (CEB) New International Version (NIV)
Know this, my dear brothers and sisters: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to grow angry. 19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
This is because an angry person doesn't produce God's righteousness. 20 for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.
Therefore, with humility, set aside all moral filth and the growth of wickedness, and welcome the word planted deep inside you—the very word that is able to save you. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
You must be doers of the word and not only hearers who mislead themselves. 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
Those who hear but don't do the word are like those who look at their faces in a mirror. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror
They look at themselves, walk away, and immediately forget what they were like. 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
But there are those who study the perfect law, the law of freedom, and continue to do it. They don't listen and then forget, but they put it into practice in their lives. They will be blessed in whatever they do. 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does.
If those who claim devotion to God don't control what they say, they mislead themselves. Their devotion is worthless. 26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.
True devotion, the kind that is pure and faultless before God the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their difficulties and to keep the world from contaminating us. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
