The word of the Lord came to me: 4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying,
I chose you before I formed you in the womb; I set you apart before you were born. I appointed you a prophet to the nations. 5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."
But I protested, "Oh no, Lord God ! Look, I don't know how to speak since I am [only] a youth." 6 "Ah, Sovereign LORD," I said, "I do not know how to speak; I am only a child."
Then the Lord said to me: Do not say: I am [only] a youth, for you will go to everyone I send you to and speak whatever I tell you. 7 But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a child.' You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.
Do not be afraid of anyone, for I will be with you to deliver you. [This is] the Lord's declaration. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you," declares the LORD.
Then the Lord reached out His hand, touched my mouth, and told me: Look, I have filled your mouth with My words. 9 Then the LORD reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, "Now, I have put my words in your mouth.
See, today I have set you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and demolish, to build and plant. 10 See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant."
Then the word of the Lord came to me, asking, "What do you see, Jeremiah?" I replied, "I see a branch of an almond tree." 11 The word of the LORD came to me: "What do you see, Jeremiah?" "I see the branch of an almond tree," I replied.
The Lord said to me, "You have seen correctly, for I watch over My word to accomplish it." 12 The LORD said to me, "You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled."
Again the word of the Lord came to me inquiring, "What do you see?" And I replied, "I see a boiling pot, its mouth tilted from the north [to the south]." 13 The word of the LORD came to me again: "What do you see?" "I see a boiling pot, tilting away from the north," I answered.
Then the Lord said to me, "Disaster will be poured out from the north on all who live in the land. 14 The LORD said to me, "From the north disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land.
Indeed, I am about to summon all the clans and kingdoms of the north." [This is]*The bracketed text has been added for clarity. the Lord's declaration. 17 "Now, get ready. Stand up and tell them everything that I command you. Do not be intimidated by them or I will cause you to cower before them. 17 "Get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them.
Today, I am the One who has made you a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land-against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the population. 18 Today I have made you a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land--against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and the people of the land.
