The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
Then Jonah prayed to his God from the belly of the fish. 1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.
He prayed: "In trouble, deep trouble, I prayed to God. He answered me. From the belly of the grave I cried, 'Help!' You heard my cry. 2 He said: "In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From the depths of the grave I called for help, and you listened to my cry.
You threw me into ocean's depths, into a watery grave, With ocean waves, ocean breakers crashing over me. 3 You hurled me into the deep, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me.
I said, 'I've been thrown away, thrown out, out of your sight. I'll never again lay eyes on your Holy Temple.' 4 I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'
Ocean gripped me by the throat. The ancient Abyss grabbed me and held tight. My head was all tangled in seaweed 5 The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.
at the bottom of the sea where the mountains take root. I was as far down as a body can go, and the gates were slamming shut behind me forever - Yet you pulled me up from that grave alive, O God, my God! 6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you brought my life up from the pit, O LORD my God.
When my life was slipping away, I remembered God, And my prayer got through to you, made it all the way to your Holy Temple. 7 "When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.
Those who worship hollow gods, god-frauds, walk away from their only true love. 8 "Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs.
But I'm worshiping you, God, calling out in thanksgiving! And I'll do what I promised I'd do! Salvation belongs to God!" 9 But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the LORD."
Then God spoke to the fish, and it vomited up Jonah on the seashore. 10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
