And it happened that while he was in a certain place praying, when he stopped a certain one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples." 1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples."
And he said to them, "When you pray, say, "Father, may your name be treated as holy. May your kingdom come. 2 He said to them, "When you pray, say: " 'Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread. 3 Give us each day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation." 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation. ' "
And he said to them, "Who of you will have a friend, and will go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves, 5 Then he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
because a friend of mine has come to me on a journey, and I do not have anything to set before him.' 6 because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.'
And that one will answer from inside [and] say, 'Do not cause me trouble! The door has already been shut and my children are with me in bed! I am not able to get up to give you [anything].' 7 "Then the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.'
I tell you, even if he does not give him [anything] [after he] gets up because [he] is his friend, at any rate because of his impudence he will get up [and] give him whatever he needs. 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man's boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs.
And I tell you, ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened for you. 9 "So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
But what father from among you, [if his] son will ask for a fish, instead of a fish will give him a snake? 11 "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?
Or also, [if] he will ask for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
Therefore if you, [although you] are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father from heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?" 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
And he was expelling a mute demon. Now it happened that [when] the demon came out, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowds were astonished. 14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.
But some of them said, "By Beelzebul the ruler of demons he expels demons!" 15 But some of them said, "By Beelzebub, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons."
And others, [in order to] test [him], were demanding from him a sign from heaven. 16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.
But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and {a divided household} falls. 17 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.
So if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say [that] I expel demons by Beelzebul. 18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebub.
But if I expel demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons expel [them]? For this [reason] they will be your judges! 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges.
But if I expel demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you! 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you.
When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his possessions are {safe}. 21 "When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe.
But when a stronger man attacks him [and] conquers him, he takes away his full armor in which he trusted and distributes his plunder. 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up the spoils.
The one who is not with me is against me, and the one who does not gather with me scatters. 23 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters.
"Whenever an unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it travels through waterless places searching for rest, and does not find [it]. It says, 'I will return to my house from which I came out.' 24 "When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.'
And [when it] arrives it finds [the house] swept and put in order. 25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order.
Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and [they] go in [and] live there. And the last [state] of that person becomes worse than the first!" 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first."
Now it happened that as he said these [things], a certain woman from the crowd raised [her] voice [and] said to him, "Blessed [is] the womb that bore you, and [the] breasts [at] which you nursed!" 27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you."
But he said, "On the contrary, blessed [are] those who hear the word of God and follow [it]!" 28 He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it."
And [as] the crowds were increasing, he began to say, "This generation is an evil generation! It demands a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah! 29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, "This is a wicked generation. It asks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.
For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation. 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation.
The queen of the south will rise up at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, [something] greater than Solomon [is] here! 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here.
The people of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and behold, [something] greater than Jonah [is] here! 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.
"No one [after] lighting a lamp puts [it] in a cellar or under a bushel basket, but on a lampstand, so that those who come in can see the light. 33 "No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead he puts it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.
Your eye is the lamp of the body. When your eye is sincere, your whole body is full of light also. But when it is evil, your body [is] dark also. 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness.
Therefore pay careful attention [that] the light in you is not darkness! 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.
If therefore your whole body [is] full of light, not having any part dark, it will be completely full of light, as when the lamp with [its] light gives light to you." 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be completely lighted, as when the light of a lamp shines on you."
And as he was speaking, a Pharisee asked him {to have a meal} with him, and he went in [and] reclined at table. 37 When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table.
And the Pharisee, [when he] saw [it], was astonished that he did not first wash before the meal. 38 But the Pharisee, noticing that Jesus did not first wash before the meal, was surprised.
But the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but your inside is full of greediness and wickedness. 39 Then the Lord said to him, "Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.
Fools! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 40 You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?
But give [as] charitable giving the things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you. 41 But give what is inside [the dish] to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.
"But woe to you, Pharisees, because you pay a tenth of mint and rue and every garden herb, and neglect justice and love for God! But it was necessary to do these [things] without neglecting those things also. 42 "Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.
Woe to you, Pharisees, because you love the best seat in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces! 43 "Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.
Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, and the people who walk over [them] do not know [it]! 44 "Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without knowing it."
And one of the legal experts answered [and] said to him, "Teacher, [when you] say these [things], you insult us also!" 45 One of the experts in the law answered him, "Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also."
So he said, "Woe to you also, legal experts, because you load people [with] burdens hard to bear, and [you] yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers! 46 Jesus replied, "And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.
Woe to you, because you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them! 47 "Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers who killed them.
As a result you are witnesses, and you approve of the deeds of your fathers, because they killed them and you build [their tombs]! 48 So you testify that you approve of what your forefathers did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.
For this [reason] also the wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and apostles, and [some] of them they will kill and persecute,' 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.'
so that the blood of all the prophets that has been shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world,
from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation! 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.
Woe to you, legal experts, because you have taken away the key to knowledge! You did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering!" 52 "Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering."
And [when] he departed from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be terribly hostile, and to question him closely about many [things], 53 When Jesus left there, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions,
plotting to catch him with reference to something {he might say}. 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.
