Meanwhile, when the crowd gathered by the thousands, so that they trampled on one another, he began to speak first to his disciples, "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, that is, their hypocrisy. 1 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.
Therefore whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed from the housetops. 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.
"I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. 4 "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.
But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies ? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.
But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
"And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God; 8 "I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God.
but whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God. 9 But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God.
And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
When they bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities, do not worry about how you are to defend yourselves or what you are to say; 11 "When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,
for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what you ought to say." 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say."
Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me." 13 Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."
But he said to him, "Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?" 14 Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?"
And he said to them, "Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions." 15 Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
Then he told them a parable: "The land of a rich man produced abundantly. 16 And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop.
And he thought to himself, "What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?' 17 He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.'
Then he said, "I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 18 "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.' 19 And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." '
But God said to him, "You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' 20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself ?'
So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God." 21 "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."
He said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. 22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.
For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 23 Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!
And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ?
If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 27 "Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!
And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.
For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them.
Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
"Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 32 "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.
Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
"Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; 35 "Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,
be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. 36 like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.
Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.
If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night.
"But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour." 40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."
Peter said, "Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for everyone?" 41 Peter asked, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?"
And the Lord said, "Who then is the faithful and prudent manager whom his master will put in charge of his slaves, to give them their allowance of food at the proper time? 42 The Lord answered, "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?
Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns.
Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions. 44 I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
But if that slave says to himself, "My master is delayed in coming,' and if he begins to beat the other slaves, men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, 'My master is taking a long time in coming,' and he then begins to beat the menservants and maidservants and to eat and drink and get drunk.
the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know, and will cut him in pieces, and put him with the unfaithful. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
That slave who knew what his master wanted, but did not prepare himself or do what was wanted, will receive a severe beating. 47 "That servant who knows his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows.
But the one who did not know and did what deserved a beating will receive a light beating. From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded. 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
"I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 49 "I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!
I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! 50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed!
Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.
From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.
they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law." 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
He also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, "It is going to rain'; and so it happens. 54 He said to the crowd: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'It's going to rain,' and it does.
And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, "There will be scorching heat'; and it happens. 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it is.
You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don't know how to interpret this present time?
"And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? 57 "Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?
Thus, when you go with your accuser before a magistrate, on the way make an effort to settle the case, or you may be dragged before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you in prison. 58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled to him on the way, or he may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.
I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny." 59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. "
