New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, 1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem
"Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We have seen his star as it arose, and we have come to worship him." 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."
Herod was deeply disturbed by their question, as was all of Jerusalem. 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law. "Where did the prophets say the Messiah would be born?" he asked them. 4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born.
"In Bethlehem," they said, "for this is what the prophet wrote: 5 "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:
'O Bethlehem of Judah, you are not just a lowly village in Judah, for a ruler will come from you who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.' " 6 " 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.' "
Then Herod sent a private message to the wise men, asking them to come see him. At this meeting he learned the exact time when they first saw the star. 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.
Then he told them, "Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!" 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him."
After this interview the wise men went their way. Once again the star appeared to them, guiding them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was. 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.
When they saw the star, they were filled with joy! 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.
They entered the house where the child and his mother, Mary, were, and they fell down before him and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.
But when it was time to leave, they went home another way, because God had warned them in a dream not to return to Herod. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up and flee to Egypt with the child and his mother," the angel said. "Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to try to kill the child." 13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."
That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary, his mother, 14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,
and they stayed there until Herod's death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: "I called my Son out of Egypt." 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."
Herod was furious when he learned that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, because the wise men had told him the star first appeared to them about two years earlier. 16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
Herod's brutal action fulfilled the prophecy of Jeremiah: 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
"A cry of anguish is heard in Ramah -- weeping and mourning unrestrained. Rachel weeps for her children, refusing to be comforted -- for they are dead." 18 "A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."
When Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and told him, 19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
"Get up and take the child and his mother back to the land of Israel, because those who were trying to kill the child are dead." 20 and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead."
So Joseph returned immediately to Israel with Jesus and his mother. 21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.
But when he learned that the new ruler was Herod's son Archelaus, he was afraid. Then, in another dream, he was warned to go to Galilee. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee,
So they went and lived in a town called Nazareth. This fulfilled what was spoken by the prophets concerning the Messiah: "He will be called a Nazarene." 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."
