1 The Lord spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai, on the first [day] of the second month of the second year after Israel's departure from the land of Egypt: 1 The LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. He said:
2 "Take a census of the entire Israelite community by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of every male one by one. 2 "Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.
3 You and Aaron are to register those who are 20 years old or more by their military divisions-everyone who can serve in Israel's army. 3 You and Aaron are to number by their divisions all the men in Israel twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army.
4 A man from each tribe is to be with you, each one the head of his ancestral house. 4 One man from each tribe, each the head of his family, is to help you.
5 These are the names of the men who are to assist you: Elizur son of Shedeur from Reuben; 5 These are the names of the men who are to assist you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;
6 Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai from Simeon; 6 from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;
7 Nahshon son of Amminadab from Judah; 7 from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab;
8 Nethanel son of Zuar from Issachar; 8 from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar;
9 Eliab son of Helon from Zebulun; 9 from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon;
10 from the sons of Joseph: Elishama son of Ammihud from Ephraim, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur from Manasseh; 10 from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;
11 Abidan son of Gideoni from Benjamin; 11 from Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni;
12 Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai from Dan; 12 from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;
13 Pagiel son of Ochran from Asher; 13 from Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran;
14 Eliasaph son of Deuel from Gad; 14 from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel;
15 Ahira son of Enan from Naphtali. 15 from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan."
16 These are the men called from the community; they are leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of Israel's clans." 16 These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes. They were the heads of the clans of Israel.
17 So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, 17 Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been given,
18 and they assembled the whole community on the first day of the second month. They recorded their ancestry by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting one by one the names of those 20 years old or more, 18 and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month. The people indicated their ancestry by their clans and families, and the men twenty years old or more were listed by name, one by one,
19 just as the Lord commanded Moses. He registered them in the Wilderness of Sinai: 19 as the LORD commanded Moses. And so he counted them in the Desert of Sinai:
20 The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting one by one the names of every male 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 20 From the descendants of Reuben the firstborn son of Israel: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families.
21 those registered for the tribe of Reuben numbered 46,500. 21 The number from the tribe of Reuben was 46,500.
22 The descendants of Simeon: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, those registered counting one by one the names of every male 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 22 From the descendants of Simeon: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were counted and listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families.
23 those registered for the tribe of Simeon numbered 59,300. 23 The number from the tribe of Simeon was 59,300.
24 The descendants of Gad: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 24 From the descendants of Gad: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families.
25 those registered for the tribe of Gad numbered 45,650. 25 The number from the tribe of Gad was 45,650.

27 those registered for the tribe of Judah numbered 74,600. 27 The number from the tribe of Judah was 74,600.
28 The descendants of Issachar: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 28 From the descendants of Issachar: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families.
29 those registered for the tribe of Issachar numbered 54,400. 29 The number from the tribe of Issachar was 54,400.
30 The descendants of Zebulun: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 30 From the descendants of Zebulun: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families.
31 those registered for the tribe of Zebulun numbered 57,400. 31 The number from the tribe of Zebulun was 57,400.
32 The descendants of Joseph: The descendants of Ephraim: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 32 From the sons of Joseph: From the descendants of Ephraim: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families.
33 those registered for the tribe of Ephraim numbered 40,500. 33 The number from the tribe of Ephraim was 40,500.
34 The descendants of Manasseh: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 34 From the descendants of Manasseh: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families.
35 those registered for the tribe of Manasseh numbered 32,200. 35 The number from the tribe of Manasseh was 32,200.
36 The descendants of Benjamin: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 36 From the descendants of Benjamin: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families.
37 those registered for the tribe of Benjamin numbered 35,400. 37 The number from the tribe of Benjamin was 35,400.
38 The descendants of Dan: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 38 From the descendants of Dan: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families.
39 those registered for the tribe of Dan numbered 62,700. 39 The number from the tribe of Dan was 62,700.
40 The descendants of Asher: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 40 From the descendants of Asher: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families.
41 those registered for the tribe of Asher numbered 41,500. 41 The number from the tribe of Asher was 41,500.
42 The descendants of Naphtali: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 42 From the descendants of Naphtali: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families.
43 those registered for the tribe of Naphtali numbered 53,400. 43 The number from the tribe of Naphtali was 53,400.
44 These are the men Moses and Aaron registered, with [the assistance of] the 12 leaders of Israel; each represented his ancestral house. 44 These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family.
45 So all the Israelites 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in Israel's army, were registered by their ancestral houses. 45 All the Israelites twenty years old or more who were able to serve in Israel's army were counted according to their families.
46 All those registered numbered 603,550. 46 The total number was 603,550.
47 But the Levites were not registered with them by their ancestral tribe. 47 The families of the tribe of Levi, however, were not counted along with the others.
48 For the Lord had told Moses: 48 The LORD had said to Moses:
49 "Do not register or take a census of the tribe of Levi with the [other] Israelites. 49 "You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites.
50 Appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They are to transport the tabernacle and all its articles, take care of it, and camp around it. 50 Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony--over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it.
51 Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to stop at a campsite, the Levites are to set it up. Any unauthorized person who comes near [it] must be put to death. 51 Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who goes near it shall be put to death.
52 "The Israelites are to camp by their military divisions, each man with his encampment and under his banner. 52 The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each man in his own camp under his own standard.
53 The Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the Israelite community." 53 The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle of the Testimony so that wrath will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the Testimony."
54 The Israelites did everything just as the Lord had commanded Moses. 54 The Israelites did all this just as the LORD commanded Moses.
