These are those who were called of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel. 16 These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes. They were the heads of the clans of Israel.
Moses and Aaron took these men who are mentioned by name. 17 Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been given,
They assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month; and they declared their ancestry by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, one by one. 18 and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month. The people indicated their ancestry by their clans and families, and the men twenty years old or more were listed by name, one by one,
As Yahweh commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai. 19 as the LORD commanded Moses. And so he counted them in the Desert of Sinai:

Of the children of Dan, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war; 38 From the descendants of Dan: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families.

These are those who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: they were each one for his fathers' house. 44 These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family.
So all those who were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war in Israel; 45 All the Israelites twenty years old or more who were able to serve in Israel's army were counted according to their families.
even all those who were numbered were six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty. 46 The total number was 603,550.
But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them. 47 The families of the tribe of Levi, however, were not counted along with the others.
For Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 48 The LORD had said to Moses:
"Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, neither shall you take a census of them among the children of Israel; 49 "You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites.
but appoint the Levites over the Tabernacle of the Testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle, and all its furnishings; and they shall take care of it, and shall encamp around it. 50 Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony--over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it.
When the tabernacle is to move, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall set it up. The stranger who comes near shall be put to death. 51 Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who goes near it shall be put to death.
The children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their divisions. 52 The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each man in his own camp under his own standard.
But the Levites shall encamp around the Tabernacle of the Testimony, that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall be responsible for the Tabernacle of the Testimony." 53 The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle of the Testimony so that wrath will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the Testimony."
Thus the children of Israel did. According to all that Yahweh commanded Moses, so they did. 54 The Israelites did all this just as the LORD commanded Moses.
