American Standard Version (ASV) New International Version (NIV)
And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 1 The LORD said to Moses,
Command the children of Israel, that they put out of the camp every leper, and every one that hath an issue, and whosoever is unclean by the dead: 2 "Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has an infectious skin disease or a discharge of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean because of a dead body.
both male and female shall ye put out, without the camp shall ye put them; that they defile not their camp, in the midst whereof I dwell. 3 Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them."
And the children of Israel did so, and put them out without the camp; as Jehovah spake unto Moses, so did the children of Israel. 4 The Israelites did this; they sent them outside the camp. They did just as the LORD had instructed Moses.
And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 5 The LORD said to Moses,
Speak unto the children of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, so as to trespass against Jehovah, and that soul shall be guilty; 6 "Say to the Israelites: 'When a man or woman wrongs another in any way and so is unfaithful to the LORD, that person is guilty
then he shall confess his sin which he hath done: and he shall make restitution for his guilt in full, and add unto it the fifth part thereof, and give it unto him in respect of whom he hath been guilty. 7 and must confess the sin he has committed. He must make full restitution for his wrong, add one fifth to it and give it all to the person he has wronged.
But if the man have no kinsman to whom restitution may be made for the guilt, the restitution for guilt which is made unto Jehovah shall be the priest's; besides the ram of the atonement, whereby atonement shall be made for him. 8 But if that person has no close relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the LORD and must be given to the priest, along with the ram with which atonement is made for him.
And every heave-offering of all the holy things of the children of Israel, which they present unto the priest, shall be his. 9 All the sacred contributions the Israelites bring to a priest will belong to him.
And every man's hallowed things shall be his: whatsoever any man giveth the priest, it shall be his. 10 Each man's sacred gifts are his own, but what he gives to the priest will belong to the priest.' "
And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 11 Then the LORD said to Moses,
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man's wife go aside, and commit a trespass against him, 12 "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'If a man's wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him
and a man lie with her carnally, and it be hid from the eyes of her husband, and be kept close, and she be defiled, and there be no witness against her, and she be not taken in the act; 13 by sleeping with another man, and this is hidden from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she has not been caught in the act),
and the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled: 14 and if feelings of jealousy come over her husband and he suspects his wife and she is impure--or if he is jealous and suspects her even though she is not impure--
then shall the man bring his wife unto the priest, and shall bring her oblation for her, the tenth part of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it, nor put frankincense thereon; for it is a meal-offering of jealousy, a meal-offering of memorial, bringing iniquity to remembrance. 15 then he is to take his wife to the priest. He must also take an offering of a tenth of an ephah of barley flour on her behalf. He must not pour oil on it or put incense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, a reminder offering to draw attention to guilt.
And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before Jehovah: 16 " 'The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the LORD.
and the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take, and put it into the water. 17 Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water.
And the priest shall set the woman before Jehovah, and let the hair of the woman's head go loose, and put the meal-offering of memorial in her hands, which is the meal-offering of jealousy: and the priest shall have in his hand the water of bitterness that causeth the curse. 18 After the priest has had the woman stand before the LORD, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse.
And the priest shall cause her to swear, and shall say unto the woman, If no man have lain with thee, and if thou have not gone aside to uncleanness, being under thy husband, be thou free from this water of bitterness that causeth the curse. 19 Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, "If no other man has slept with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you.
But if thou have gone aside, being under thy husband, and if thou be defiled, and some man have lain with thee besides thy husband: 20 But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have defiled yourself by sleeping with a man other than your husband"--
then the priest shall cause the woman to swear with the oath of cursing, and the priest shall say unto the woman, Jehovah make thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when Jehovah doth make thy thigh to fall away, and thy body to swell; 21 here the priest is to put the woman under this curse of the oath--"may the LORD cause your people to curse and denounce you when he causes your thigh to waste away and your abdomen to swell.
and this water that causeth the curse shall go into thy bowels, and make thy body to swell, and thy thigh to fall away. And the woman shall say, Amen, Amen. 22 May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells and your thigh wastes away. " " 'Then the woman is to say, "Amen. So be it."
And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out into the water of bitterness: 23 " 'The priest is to write these curses on a scroll and then wash them off into the bitter water.
and he shall make the woman drink the water of bitterness that causeth the curse; and the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her [and become] bitter. 24 He shall have the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water will enter her and cause bitter suffering.
And the priest shall take the meal-offering of jealousy out of the woman's hand, and shall wave the meal-offering before Jehovah, and bring it unto the altar: 25 The priest is to take from her hands the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the LORD and bring it to the altar.
and the priest shall take a handful of the meal-offering, as the memorial thereof, and burn it upon the altar, and afterward shall make the woman drink the water. 26 The priest is then to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial offering and burn it on the altar; after that, he is to have the woman drink the water.
And when he hath made her drink the water, then it shall come to pass, if she be defiled, and have committed a trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her [and become] bitter, and her body shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away: and the woman shall be a curse among her people. 27 If she has defiled herself and been unfaithful to her husband, then when she is made to drink the water that brings a curse, it will go into her and cause bitter suffering; her abdomen will swell and her thigh waste away, and she will become accursed among her people.
And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed. 28 If, however, the woman has not defiled herself and is free from impurity, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children.
This is the law of jealousy, when a wife, being under her husband, goeth aside, and is defiled; 29 " 'This, then, is the law of jealousy when a woman goes astray and defiles herself while married to her husband,
or when the spirit of jealousy cometh upon a man, and he is jealous of his wife; then shall he set the woman before Jehovah, and the priest shall execute upon her all this law. 30 or when feelings of jealousy come over a man because he suspects his wife. The priest is to have her stand before the LORD and is to apply this entire law to her.
And the man shall be free from iniquity, and that woman shall bear her iniquity. 31 The husband will be innocent of any wrongdoing, but the woman will bear the consequences of her sin.' "
