Proverbs 1 CEB/NIV - Online Parallel Bible

Common English Bible (CEB) New International Version (NIV)
The proverbs of Solomon, King David's son, from Israel: 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
Their purpose is to teach wisdom and discipline, to help one understand wise sayings. 2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight;
They provide insightful instruction, which is righteous, just, and full of integrity. 3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair;
They make the naive mature, the young knowledgeable and discreet. 4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young--
The wise hear them and grow in wisdom; those with understanding gain guidance. 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance--
They help one understand proverbs and difficult sayings, the words of the wise, and their puzzles. 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.
Wisdom begins with the fear of the LORD, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Listen, my son, to your father's instruction; don't neglect your mother's teaching; 8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
for they are a graceful wreath on your head, and beads for your neck. 9 They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.
My son, don't let sinners entice you. Don't go 10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.
when they say: "Come with us. Let's set up a deadly ambush. Let's secretly wait for the innocent just for fun. 11 If they say, "Come along with us; let's lie in wait for someone's blood, let's waylay some harmless soul;
Let's swallow up the living like the grave— whole, like those who go down into the pit. 12 let's swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
We'll find all sorts of precious wealth; we'll fill our houses with plunder. 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder;
Throw in your lot with us; we'll share our money." 14 throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse"--
My son, don't go on the path with them; keep your feet from their way, 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths;
because their feet run to evil; they hurry to spill blood. 16 for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood.
It's useless to cast a net in the sight of a bird. 17 How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds!
But these sinners set up a deadly ambush; they lie in wait for their own lives. 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves!
These are the ways of all who seek unjust gain; it costs them their lives. 19 Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it.
Wisdom shouts in the street; in the public square she raises her voice. 20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares;
Above the noisy crowd, she calls out. At the entrances of the city gates, she has her say: 21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech:
"How long will you clueless people love your naïveté, mockers hold their mocking dear, and fools hate knowledge? 22 "How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?
You should respond when I correct you. Look, I'll pour out my spirit on you. I'll reveal my words to you. 23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.
I invited you, but you rejected me; I stretched out my hand to you, but you paid no attention. 24 But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand,
You ignored all my advice, and you didn't want me to correct you. 25 since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke,
So I'll laugh at your disaster; I'll make fun of you when dread comes over you, 26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you--
when terror hits you like a hurricane, and your disaster comes in like a tornado, when distress and oppression overcome you. 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
Then they will call me, but I won't answer; they will seek me, but won't find me 28 "Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me.
because they hated knowledge and didn't choose the fear of the LORD. 29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD,
They didn't want my advice; they rejected all my corrections. 30 since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,
They will eat from the fruit of their way, and they'll be full of their own schemes. 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
The immature will die because they turn away; smugness will destroy fools. 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
Those who obey me will dwell securely, untroubled by the dread of harm." 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."
