Holman Christian Standard (CSB) New International Version (NIV)
The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
For gaining wisdom and being instructed; for understanding insightful sayings; 2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight;
for receiving wise instruction [in] righteousness, justice, and integrity; 3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair;
for teaching shrewdness to the inexperienced, knowledge and discretion to a young man- 4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young--
a wise man will listen and increase his learning, and a discerning man will obtain guidance- 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance--
for understanding a proverb or a parable, the words of the wise, and their riddles. 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Listen, my son, to your father's instruction, and don't reject your mother's teaching, 8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
for they will be a garland of grace on your head and a [gold] chain around your neck. 9 They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.
My son, if sinners entice you, don't be persuaded. 10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.
If they say-"Come with us! Let's set an ambush and kill someone. Let's attack some innocent person just for fun! 11 If they say, "Come along with us; let's lie in wait for someone's blood, let's waylay some harmless soul;
Let's swallow them alive, like Sheol, still healthy as they go down to the Pit. 12 let's swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
We'll find all kinds of valuable property and fill our houses with plunder. 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder;
Throw in your lot with us, and we'll all share our money"- 14 throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse"--
my son, don't travel that road with them or set foot on their path, 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths;
because their feet run toward trouble and they hurry to commit murder. 16 for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood.
It is foolish to spread a net where any bird can see it, 17 How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds!
but they set an ambush to kill themselves; they attack their own lives. 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves!
Such are the paths of all who pursue gain dishonestly; it takes the lives of those who profit from it. 19 Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it.
Wisdom calls out in the street; she raises her voice in the public squares. 20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares;
She cries out above the commotion; she speaks at the entrance of the city gates: 21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech:
"How long, foolish ones, will you love ignorance? [How long] will [you] mockers enjoy mocking and [you] fools hate knowledge? 22 "How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?
If you turn to my discipline, then I will pour out my spirit on you and teach you my words. 23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.
Since I called out and you refused, extended my hand and no one paid attention, 24 But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand,
since you neglected all my counsel and did not accept my correction, 25 since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke,
I, in turn, will laugh at your calamity. I will mock when terror strikes you, 26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you--
when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when trouble and stress overcome you. 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
Then they will call me, but I won't answer; they will search for me, but won't find me. 28 "Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me.
Because they hated knowledge, didn't choose to fear the Lord, 29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD,
were not interested in my counsel, and rejected all my correction, 30 since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,
they will eat the fruit of their way and be glutted with their own schemes. 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
For the waywardness of the inexperienced will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
But whoever listens to me will live securely and be free from the fear of danger." 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."
