Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
To know wisdom and instruction, to understand sayings of understanding, 2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight;
to gain {insightful instruction}, righteousness and justice and equity, 3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair;
to give shrewdness to the simple, knowledge and purpose to the young, 4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young--
may the wise hear and increase learning, and the one who understands gain direction, 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance--
to understand a proverb and an expression, words of wisdom and their riddles. 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.
Fear of Yahweh [is the] beginning of knowledge; wisdom and instruction, fools despise. 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
My child, may you keep your father's instruction, and do not reject your mother's teachings, 8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
for they [are] a garland of favor for your head, and pendants for your neck. 9 They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.
My child, if sinners entice you, do not consent. 10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.
If they say, "Come with us! We shall lie in wait for blood; we shall ambush the innocent without cause. 11 If they say, "Come along with us; let's lie in wait for someone's blood, let's waylay some harmless soul;
Like Sheol, we will swallow them alive and whole, {like those who descend to the pit}. 12 let's swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
We shall find all precious wealth, we shall fill our houses [with] booty, 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder;
you shall throw your lot in our midst, there will be one purse for all of us." 14 throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse"--
My child, do not walk in their way. Keep your foot from their paths, 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths;
for their feet run to evil, and they hurry to shed blood, 16 for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood.
for "in vain is the net scattered, in the sight of any {winged bird}." 17 How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds!
They lie in wait for their [own] blood. They ambush their [own] lives. 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves!
Thus are the ways of all who are greedy [for] gain-- it will take the life of its possessors. 19 Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it.
Wisdom calls out in the streets, in the squares she raises her voice. 20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares;
On a {busy corner} she cries out, at the entrances of the gates in the city, she speaks her sayings: 21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech:
"{How long}, O simple ones, will you love simplicity? And [how long] will scoffers delight in their scoffing, and fools hate knowledge? 22 "How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?
May you turn to my argument! Behold, I shall pour out my spirit upon you; I will make my words known to you. 23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.
Because I called out and you refused me, I stretched out my hand, yet there is none who heeds. 24 But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand,
You have ignored all my counsel, and my reproof you are not willing [to accept]. 25 since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke,
I will also laugh at your calamity; I will mock when panic comes [upon] you. 26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you--
When your panic comes like a storm, and your calamity arrives like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you, 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
then they will call me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but not find me. 28 "Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me.
Since they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of Yahweh, 29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD,
they were not willing [to accept] my counsel, they despised all my reproof. 30 since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,
They shall eat from the fruit of their way, and they shall be sated from their own schemes, 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
for the waywardness of the simple ones will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
Whoever listens to me will dwell in security and rest securely from dread and disaster." 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."
