Those who love discipline love knowledge, and those who hate correction are stupid. 1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.
The LORD favors good people, but he condemns schemers. 2 A good man obtains favor from the LORD, but the LORD condemns a crafty man.
No one is established by wicked acts, but the roots of the righteous can't be disturbed. 3 A man cannot be established through wickedness, but the righteous cannot be uprooted.
A strong woman is a crown to her husband, but a disgraceful woman is like rot in his bones. 4 A wife of noble character is her husband's crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.
The plans of the righteous are just, but the guidance of the wicked is deceptive. 5 The plans of the righteous are just, but the advice of the wicked is deceitful.
The words of the wicked are a deathtrap, but the speech of those who do right rescues them. 6 The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them.
The wicked are destroyed and are no more, but the family of the righteous will endure. 7 Wicked men are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous stands firm.
A person is praised for his insight, but a warped mind leads to contempt. 8 A man is praised according to his wisdom, but men with warped minds are despised.
Better to be held in low regard and have a servant than to be conceited and lack food. 9 Better to be a nobody and yet have a servant than pretend to be somebody and have no food.
The righteous care about their livestock's needs, but even the compassion of the wicked is cruel. 10 A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.
Those who work their land will have plenty to eat, but those who engage in empty pursuits have no sense. 11 He who works his land will have abundant food, but he who chases fantasies lacks judgment.
Desiring evil is a trap for the wicked, but the root of the righteous endures. 12 The wicked desire the plunder of evil men, but the root of the righteous flourishes.
The wicked are trapped by the transgressions of their lips, but the righteous escape from distress. 13 An evil man is trapped by his sinful talk, but a righteous man escapes trouble.
From the fruit of their speech, people are well satisfied; their work results in reward. 14 From the fruit of his lips a man is filled with good things as surely as the work of his hands rewards him.
Fools see their own way as right, but the wise listen to advice. 15 The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.
Fools reveal their anger right away, but the shrewd hide their contempt. 16 A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult.
Those who state the truth speak justly, but a false witness deceives. 17 A truthful witness gives honest testimony, but a false witness tells lies.
Some chatter on like a stabbing sword, but a wise tongue heals. 18 Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only for a moment. 19 Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.
Deceit is in the heart of those who plan evil, but there is joy for those who advise peace. 20 There is deceit in the hearts of those who plot evil, but joy for those who promote peace.
No harm happens to the righteous, but the wicked receive their fill of trouble. 21 No harm befalls the righteous, but the wicked have their fill of trouble.
The LORD detests false lips; he favors those who do what is true. 22 The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful.
The shrewd conceal their knowledge, but the heart of fools proclaims their stupidity. 23 A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out folly.
A hard worker is in charge, while a lazy one will be sentenced to hard labor. 24 Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in slave labor.
Anxiety leads to depression, but a good word encourages. 25 An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.
The righteous offer guidance to their neighbors, but the path of the wicked makes them wander. 26 A righteous man is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.
The lazy don't roast their prey, but hard workers receive precious riches. 27 The lazy man does not roast his game, but the diligent man prizes his possessions.
The way of the righteous leads to life, but the detestable path leads to death. 28 In the way of righteousness there is life; along that path is immortality.
