When you sit down to dine with a ruler, consider carefully what is before you, 1 When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what is before you,
and stick a knife in your throat if you have a big appetite; 2 and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.
don't desire his choice food, for that food is deceptive. 3 Do not crave his delicacies, for that food is deceptive.
Don't wear yourself out to get rich; stop giving your attention to it. 4 Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint
As soon as your eyes fly to it, it disappears, for it makes wings for itself and flies like an eagle to the sky. 5 Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.
Don't eat a stingy person's bread, and don't desire his choice food, 6 Do not eat the food of a stingy man, do not crave his delicacies;
for as he thinks within himself, so he is. "Eat and drink," he says to you, but his heart is not with you. 7 for he is the kind of man who is always thinking about the cost. "Eat and drink," he says to you, but his heart is not with you.
You will vomit the little you've eaten and waste your pleasant words. 8 You will vomit up the little you have eaten and will have wasted your compliments.
Don't speak to a fool, for he will despise the insight of your words. 9 Do not speak to a fool, for he will scorn the wisdom of your words.
Don't move an ancient property line, and don't encroach on the fields of the fatherless, 10 Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless,
for their Redeemer is strong, and He will take up their case against you. 11 for their Defender is strong; he will take up their case against you.
Apply yourself to instruction and listen to words of knowledge. 12 Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.
Don't withhold correction from a youth; if you beat him with a rod, he will not die. 13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die.
Strike him with a rod, and you will rescue his life from Sheol. 14 Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death.
My son, if your heart is wise, my heart will indeed rejoice. 15 My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad;
My innermost being will cheer when your lips say what is right. 16 my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
Don't be jealous of sinners; instead, always fear the Lord. 17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the LORD.
For then you will have a future, and your hope will never fade. 18 There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.
Listen, my son, and be wise; keep your mind on the right course. 19 Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path
Don't associate with those who drink too much wine, or with those who gorge themselves on meat. 20 Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat,
For the drunkard and the glutton will become poor, and grogginess will clothe [them] in rags. 21 for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags
Listen to your father who gave you life, and don't despise your mother when she is old. 22 Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.
Buy-and do not sell-truth, wisdom, instruction, and understanding. 23 Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding.
The father of a righteous son will rejoice greatly, and one who fathers a wise son will delight in him. 24 The father of a righteous man has great joy; he who has a wise son delights in him.
Let your father and mother have joy, and let her who gave birth to you rejoice. 25 May your father and mother be glad; may she who gave you birth rejoice!
My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. 26 My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways,
For a prostitute is a deep pit, and a forbidden woman is a narrow well; 27 for a prostitute is a deep pit and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
indeed, she sets an ambush like a robber and increases those among men who are unfaithful. 28 Like a bandit she lies in wait, and multiplies the unfaithful among men.
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has conflicts? Who has complaints? Who has wounds for no reason? Who has red eyes? 29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
Those who linger over wine, those who go looking for mixed wine. 30 Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
Don't gaze at wine when it is red, when it gleams in the cup and goes down smoothly. 31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly!
In the end it bites like a snake and stings like a viper. 32 In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper.
Your eyes will see strange things, and you will say absurd things. 33 Your eyes will see strange sights and your mind imagine confusing things.
You'll be like someone sleeping out at sea or lying down on the top of a ship's mast. 34 You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging.
"They struck me, but I feel no pain! They beat me, but I didn't know it! When will I wake up? I'll look for another [drink]." 35 "They hit me," you will say, "but I'm not hurt! They beat me, but I don't feel it! When will I wake up so I can find another drink?"
