The Darby Translation (DBY) New International Version (NIV)
He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and without remedy. 1 A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy.
When the righteous increase, the people rejoice; but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn. 2 When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.
Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father; but he that is a companion of harlots destroyeth [his] substance. 3 A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
A king by just judgment establisheth the land; but he that taketh gifts overthroweth it. 4 By justice a king gives a country stability, but one who is greedy for bribes tears it down.
A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his steps. 5 Whoever flatters his neighbor is spreading a net for his feet.
In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare; but the righteous shall sing and rejoice. 6 An evil man is snared by his own sin, but a righteous one can sing and be glad.
The righteous taketh knowledge of the cause of the poor; the wicked understandeth not knowledge. 7 The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern.
Scornful men set the city in a flame; but the wise turn away anger. 8 Mockers stir up a city, but wise men turn away anger.
If a wise man contendeth with a fool, whether he rage or laugh, [he] hath no rest. 9 If a wise man goes to court with a fool, the fool rages and scoffs, and there is no peace.
The bloodthirsty hate the perfect, but the upright care for his soul. 10 Bloodthirsty men hate a man of integrity and seek to kill the upright.
A fool uttereth all his mind; but a wise [man] keepeth it back. 11 A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.
If a ruler hearken to lying words, all his servants are wicked. 12 If a ruler listens to lies, all his officials become wicked.
The indigent and the oppressor meet together; Jehovah lighteneth the eyes of them both. 13 The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: The LORD gives sight to the eyes of both.
A king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever. 14 If a king judges the poor with fairness, his throne will always be secure.
The rod and reproof give wisdom; but a child left [to himself] bringeth his mother to shame. 15 The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.
When the wicked increase, transgression increaseth; but the righteous shall see their fall. 16 When the wicked thrive, so does sin, but the righteous will see their downfall.
Chasten thy son, and he shall give thee rest, and shall give delight unto thy soul. 17 Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul.
Where there is no vision the people cast off restraint; but happy is he that keepeth the law. 18 Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the law.
A servant is not corrected by words: he understandeth indeed, but he will not answer. 19 A servant cannot be corrected by mere words; though he understands, he will not respond.
Hast thou seen a man hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him. 20 Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child, shall in the end have him as a son. 21 If a man pampers his servant from youth, he will bring grief in the end.
An angry man exciteth contention; and a furious man aboundeth in transgression. 22 An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered one commits many sins.
A man's pride bringeth him low; but the humble in spirit shall obtain honour. 23 A man's pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor.
Whoso shareth with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth the adjuration, and declareth not. 24 The accomplice of a thief is his own enemy; he is put under oath and dare not testify.
The fear of man bringeth a snare; but whoso putteth his confidence in Jehovah is protected. 25 Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.
Many seek the ruler's face; but a man's right judgment is from Jehovah. 26 Many seek an audience with a ruler, but it is from the LORD that man gets justice.
An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous; and he that is of upright way is an abomination to the wicked [man]. 27 The righteous detest the dishonest; the wicked detest the upright.
