Complete Jewish Bible (CJB) New International Version (NIV)
My son, don't forget my teaching, keep my commands in your heart; 1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
for they will add to you many days, years of life and peace. 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.
Do not let grace and truth leave you -bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. 3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you will win favor and esteem in the sight of God and of people. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
Trust in ADONAI with all your heart; do not rely on your own understanding. 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge him; then he will level your paths. 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Don't be conceited about your own wisdom; but fear ADONAI, and turn from evil. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
This will bring health to your body and give strength to your bones. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Honor ADONAI with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your income. 9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
Then your granaries will be filled and your vats overflow with new wine. 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
My son, don't despise ADONAI's discipline or resent his reproof; 11 My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke,
for ADONAI corrects those he loves like a father who delights in his son. 12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
Happy the person who finds wisdom, the person who acquires understanding; 13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding,
for her profit exceeds that of silver, gaining her is better than gold, 14 for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
she is more precious than pearls -nothing you want can compare with her. 15 She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand, riches and honor in her left. 16 Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. 17 Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who grasp her; whoever holds fast to her will be made happy. 18 She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.
ADONAI by wisdom founded the earth, by understanding he established the heavens, 19 By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;
by his knowledge the deep [springs] burst open and the dew condenses from the sky. 20 by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
My son, don't let these slip from your sight; preserve common sense and discretion; 21 My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight;
they will be life for your being and grace for your neck. 22 they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.
Then you will walk your way securely, without hurting your foot. 23 Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble;
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. 24 when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Don't be afraid of sudden terror or destruction caused by the wicked, when it comes; 25 Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
for you can rely on ADONAI; he will keep your foot from being caught in a trap. 26 for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.
Don't withhold good from someone entitled to it when you have in hand the power to do it. 27 Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.
Don't tell your neighbor, "Go away! Come another time; I'll give it to you tomorrow," when you have it now. 28 Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"-- when you now have it with you.
Don't plan harm against your neighbor who lives beside you trustingly. 29 Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you.
Don't quarrel with someone for no reason, if he has done you no harm. 30 Do not accuse a man for no reason-- when he has done you no harm.
Don't envy a man of violence, don't choose any of his ways; 31 Do not envy a violent man or choose any of his ways,
for the perverse is an abomination to ADONAI, but he shares his secret counsel with the upright. 32 for the LORD detests a perverse man but takes the upright into his confidence.
ADONAI's curse is in the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous. 33 The LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.
The scornful he scorns, but gives grace to the humble. 34 He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble.
The wise win honor, but fools win shame. 35 The wise inherit honor, but fools he holds up to shame.
