My son, do not forget my teaching. Keep my commands in your heart. 1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
They will help you live for many years. They will bring you success. 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.
Don't let love and truth ever leave you. Tie them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart. 3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you will find favor and a good name in the eyes of God and people. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart. Do not depend on your own understanding. 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways remember him. Then he will make your paths smooth and straight. 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Don't be wise in your own eyes. Have respect for the LORD and avoid evil. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
That will bring health to your body. It will make your bones strong. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Honor the LORD with your wealth. Give him the first share of all your crops. 9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
Then your storerooms will be so full they can't hold everything. Your huge jars will spill over with fresh wine. 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
My son, do not hate the LORD's training. Do not object when he corrects you. 11 My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke,
The LORD trains those he loves. He is like a father who trains the son he is pleased with. 12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
Blessed is the one who finds wisdom. Blessed is the one who gains understanding. 13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding,
Wisdom pays better than silver does. She earns more than gold does. 14 for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
She is worth more than rubies. Nothing you want can compare with her. 15 She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand. In her left hand are riches and honor. 16 Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are pleasant ways. All her paths lead to peace. 17 Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who hold her close. Those who hold on to her will be blessed. 18 She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.
By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations. Through understanding he set the heavens in place. 19 By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;
By his knowledge the seas were separated, and the clouds dropped their dew. 20 by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
My son, hold on to good sense and the understanding of what is right. Don't let them out of your sight. 21 My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight;
They will be life for you. They will be like a gracious necklace around your neck. 22 they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.
Then you will go on your way in safety. You will not trip and fall. 23 Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble;
When you lie down, you won't be afraid. When you lie down, you will sleep soundly. 24 when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Don't be terrified by sudden trouble. Don't be afraid when sinners are destroyed. 25 Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
The LORD is the one you will trust in. He will keep your feet from being caught in a trap. 26 for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.
Don't hold back good from those who are worthy of it. Don't hold it back when you can help. 27 Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.
Suppose you have something to give. Don't say to your neighbor, "Come back later. I'll give it to you tomorrow." 28 Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"-- when you now have it with you.
Don't plan to harm your neighbor. He lives near you and trusts you. 29 Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you.
Don't bring charges against a man without any reason. He has not harmed you. 30 Do not accuse a man for no reason-- when he has done you no harm.
Don't be jealous of a man who hurts others. Don't choose any of his ways. 31 Do not envy a violent man or choose any of his ways,
The LORD really hates sinful people. But he makes honest people his closest friends. 32 for the LORD detests a perverse man but takes the upright into his confidence.
The LORD puts a curse on the houses of sinners. But he blesses the homes of those who do what is right. 33 The LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.
He laughs at proud people who make fun of others. But he gives grace to those who are not proud. 34 He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble.
Wise people receive honor. But the LORD puts foolish people to shame. 35 The wise inherit honor, but fools he holds up to shame.
