The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
A white-tailed deer drinks from the creek; I want to drink God, deep draughts of God. 1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.
I'm thirsty for God-alive. I wonder, "Will I ever make it - arrive and drink in God's presence?" 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
I'm on a diet of tears - tears for breakfast, tears for supper. All day long people knock at my door, Pestering, "Where is this God of yours?" 3 My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, "Where is your God?"
These are the things I go over and over, emptying out the pockets of my life. I was always at the head of the worshiping crowd, right out in front, Leading them all, eager to arrive and worship, Shouting praises, singing thanksgiving - celebrating, all of us, God's feast! 4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng.
Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues? Fix my eyes on God - soon I'll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He's my God. 5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and
When my soul is in the dumps, I rehearse everything I know of you, From Jordan depths to Hermon heights, including Mount Mizar. 6 my God. My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon--from Mount Mizar.
Chaos calls to chaos, to the tune of whitewater rapids. Your breaking surf, your thundering breakers crash and crush me. 7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.
Then God promises to love me all day, sing songs all through the night! My life is God's prayer. 8 By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me-- a prayer to the God of my life.
Sometimes I ask God, my rock-solid God, "Why did you let me down? Why am I walking around in tears, harassed by enemies?" 9 I say to God my Rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?"
They're out for the kill, these tormentors with their obscenities, Taunting day after day, "Where is this God of yours?" 10 My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, "Where is your God?"
Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues? Fix my eyes on God - soon I'll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He's my God. 11 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
