Psalm 55 NAS/NIV - Online Parallel Bible

New American Standard (NAS) New International Version (NIV)
Give ear to my prayer, O God; And do not hide Yourself from my supplication. 1 Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea;
Give heed to me and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and am surely distracted, 2 hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught
Because of the voice of the enemy, Because of the pressure of the wicked; For they bring down trouble upon me And in anger they bear a grudge against me. 3 at the voice of the enemy, at the stares of the wicked; for they bring down suffering upon me and revile me in their anger.
My heart is in anguish within me, And the terrors of death have fallen upon me. 4 My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death assail me.
Fear and trembling come upon me, And horror has overwhelmed me. 5 Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me.
I said, "Oh , that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. 6 I said, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest--
"Behold, I would wander far away, I would lodge in the wilderness. Selah. 7 I would flee far away and stay in the desert; "Selah"
"I would hasten to my place of refuge From the stormy wind and tempest." 8 I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm."
Confuse, O Lord , divide their tongues, For I have seen violence and strife in the city. 9 Confuse the wicked, O Lord, confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city.
Day and night they go around her upon her walls, And iniquity and mischief are in her midst. 10 Day and night they prowl about on its walls; malice and abuse are within it.
Destruction is in her midst; Oppression and deceit do not depart from her streets. 11 Destructive forces are at work in the city; threats and lies never leave its streets.
For it is not an enemy who reproaches me, Then I could bear it; Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me, Then I could hide myself from him. 12 If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were raising himself against me, I could hide from him.
But it is you, a man my equal, My companion and my familiar friend; 13 But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend,
We who had sweet fellowship together Walked in the house of God in the throng. 14 with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship as we walked with the throng at the house of God.
Let death come deceitfully upon them; Let them go down alive to Sheol, For evil is in their dwelling, in their midst. 15 Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the grave, for evil finds lodging among them.
As for me, I shall call upon God, And the LORD will save me. 16 But I call to God, and the LORD saves me.
Evening and morning and at noon, I will complain and murmur, And He will hear my voice. 17 Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.
He will redeem my soul in peace from the battle which is against me, For they are many who strive with me. 18 He ransoms me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.
God will hear and answer them- Even the one who sits enthroned from of old - Selah. With whom there is no change, And who do not fear God. 19 God, who is enthroned forever, will hear them and afflict them-- "Selah" men who never change their ways and have no fear of God.
He has put forth his hands against those who were at peace with him; He has violated his covenant. 20 My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.
His speech was smoother than butter, But his heart was war; His words were softer than oil, Yet they were drawn swords. 21 His speech is smooth as butter, yet war is in his heart; his words are more soothing than oil, yet they are drawn swords.
Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken. 22 Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.
But You, O God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction; Men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days. But I will trust in You. 23 But you, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of corruption; bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you.
