Alas for those who are at ease in Zion, and for those who feel secure on Mount Samaria, the notables of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel resorts! 1 Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria, you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come!
Cross over to Calneh, and see; from there go to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is your territory greater than their territory, 2 Go to Calneh and look at it; go from there to great Hamath, and then go down to Gath in Philistia. Are they better off than your two kingdoms? Is their land larger than yours?
O you that put far away the evil day, and bring near a reign of violence? 3 You put off the evil day and bring near a reign of terror.
Alas for those who lie on beds of ivory, and lounge on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock, and calves from the stall; 4 You lie on beds inlaid with ivory and lounge on your couches. You dine on choice lambs and fattened calves.
who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp, and like David improvise on instruments of music; 5 You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments.
who drink wine from bowls, and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph! 6 You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
Therefore they shall now be the first to go into exile, and the revelry of the loungers shall pass away. 7 Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile; your feasting and lounging will end.
The Lord God has sworn by himself (says the Lord, the God of hosts): I abhor the pride of Jacob and hate his strongholds; and I will deliver up the city and all that is in it. 8 The Sovereign LORD has sworn by himself--the LORD God Almighty declares: "I abhor the pride of Jacob and detest his fortresses; I will deliver up the city and everything in it."
If ten people remain in one house, they shall die. 9 If ten men are left in one house, they too will die.
And if a relative, one who burns the dead, shall take up the body to bring it out of the house, and shall say to someone in the innermost parts of the house, "Is anyone else with you?" the answer will come, "No." Then the relative shall say, "Hush! We must not mention the name of the Lord." 10 And if a relative who is to burn the bodies comes to carry them out of the house and asks anyone still hiding there, "Is anyone with you?" and he says, "No," then he will say, "Hush! We must not mention the name of the LORD."
See, the Lord commands, and the great house shall be shattered to bits, and the little house to pieces. 11 For the LORD has given the command, and he will smash the great house into pieces and the small house into bits.
Do horses run on rocks? Does one plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood— 12 Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plow there with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness--
you who rejoice in Lo-debar, who say, "Have we not by our own strength taken Karnaim for ourselves?" 13 you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar and say, "Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?"
Indeed, I am raising up against you a nation, O house of Israel, says the Lord, the God of hosts, and they shall oppress you from Lebo-hamath to the Wadi Arabah. 14 For the LORD God Almighty declares, "I will stir up a nation against you, O house of Israel, that will oppress you all the way from Lebo Hamath to the valley of the Arabah."
