Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
"All the commandment which I command you this day you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to give to your fathers. 1 Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land that the LORD promised on oath to your forefathers.
And you shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments, or not. 2 Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.
And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know; that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but that man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD. 3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Your clothing did not wear out upon you, and your foot did not swell, these forty years. 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.
Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you. 5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.
So you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, by walking in his ways and by fearing him. 6 Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and revering him.
For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills, 7 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land--a land with streams and pools of water, with springs flowing in the valleys and hills;
a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, 8 a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey;
a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. 9 a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.
And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. 10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.
"Take heed lest you forget the LORD your God, by not keeping his commandments and his ordinances and his statutes, which I command you this day: 11 Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.
lest, when you have eaten and are full, and have built goodly houses and live in them, 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,
and when your herds and flocks multiply, and your silver and gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied,
then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock, 15 He led you through the vast and dreadful desert, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.
who fed you in the wilderness with manna which your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end. 16 He gave you manna to eat in the desert, something your fathers had never known, to humble and to test you so that in the end it might go well with you.
Beware lest you say in your heart, 'My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.' 17 You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me."
You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth; that he may confirm his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as at this day. 18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.
And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you this day that you shall surely perish. 19 If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.
Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God. 20 Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.
